SWANS PEPLY BACK: That is the price you must pay in order to enjoy the freedom to fish in this country. remember if it wasnt for the military you wouldnt have a place to fish!! those type of exercises are set up over a year in advance before any tourney dates are set. If the tourney directors were smart they would consult the military prior to setting a date to help ensure this doesnt happen again. When there are non military boats in the operating area it really puts a dampner on what they can and cant do. If you were the poor ******* on watch trying to keep up with all the traffic on the water you would understand they dont want to be any where near the charter fleet. You should not bash the military instead fly a flag and salute the ships that you pass.

7 YEARS AGO DURING A JOINT BRITISH-NATO-U.S. NAVAL OPERATION......THE NAVY SAT A GUNSHIP SIDEWAYS BETWEEN MY RIGGERS AT POINT BLANK RANGE AND ORDERED ME TO LEAVE THE BIG ROCK AREA I WAS FISHING............WHY DIDN'T THEY TAKE THE TIME TO CALL ME , AS YOU SAY ABOVE THAT TOURNAMENTCOMMITTEES SHOULD DO, AND INFORM ME THAT THEY WANTED TO HOLD MANEUVERS IN MY OFFICE!!!???

I understand where you are coming. the reason the ship came along side of you is because there was a live fire exercise going on. Unfortunately that some of the best fishing areas are located in the operating areas. Normally they would move farther offshore to avoid the fleet but when the drones are taking off from Damneck Va there are limited on their range as far a fuel goes. What they do is send a drone (unmanned) at a ship to test their ability to detect and destroy an incoming missle or aircraft. the big rock area to hatteras canyon happens to be the best place to do this. they want to try and save as many of the multi million dollar drones as they can. The reason the navy doesnt call you directly is they dont know where you are going to fish every day and they dont know if you are going to be in the area that day. The Navy knows where they will be at. If they tourneyment committy just made one or two phone calls they could help avoid this from happening again. Those areas are listed on charts and I know that everyone fishes in them anyway. I am not questioning you patriotism. Just posting that the military you were bashing is the same one that allows everyone to fish how they want to in this country.Yes they knew you were in the area they have an unbelievable radar system. I am sure they tried to raise you on 16 before they got as close as they could. They photo everything within photo range for identification reasons. Just in case they have an issue with a charter boat. they take pictures of all vessels. They were not there just to ruin the tourney though! they are training but I wish you could see what all goes into a live missle fire. I know you dont want to have the missle target you and not the drone. I have been on the bridge many times during our encounter with a charter boat and believe me when I say they want to avoid the fleet at all cost. They came along side of you for safety reasons. Most of the captains on the ships are fisherman too and they do understand you are just like them making a living on the water. I am not poking you in the eye Marty but hope that I might enlighten you and others as to why they the military comes along side of you and tell you must leave the area.

A federal appeals court in San Francisco has ruled that whales, porpoises and dolphins can't sue the U.S. Military and stop them from using the high-powered sonar. Hilo based environmental attorney Lanny Sinkin asked for an injunction banning the long-range sonar. The judge stated that the cetations had no "standing" under the Endangered Species Act, The Marine Mammal Protection Act or the National Environmental Policy Act. lanny wanted the military to stop the sonar until an environmental impact statement could be drafted.

The high-powered sonar has been implicated in a number of worldwide marine mamal deaths including 2000 Bahama incident when 17 animals beached themselves after a Navy sonar exercise. In july at Kaua'i's Hanalei Bay, 200 melon head whales crowded into the bay during a sonar test

The U.S Navy is cooperating with fisheries officials and marine mammal activists on the deaths of at least 37 whales that beached themselves and died on the beaches on North Carolina.

The Navy was conducting it's new, powerful acoustic sonar test 200 miles offshore and denied responsibility. NOAA officials looked to the Navy as the cause of the deaths because the death of three species of whales at the same time is not normal in beachings. Most of the dead whales were pilot whales, and six of those were pregnant. Mink and dwarf sperm whales also died.

The Navy reported that the U.S. KEARSAGE Expeditionary Strike Group based in Norfolk, Virginia, was conducting an antisubmarine exercise 240 nautical miles from Oregon Inlet, North Carolina. One ship not with the strike group used the high acoustic sonar for seven minutes 90 miles from where the dead whales were found.

The Navy said that the new generation of silent subs is forcing them to use powerful low-frequency sonar that travels farther than traditional mid-frequency sounds. Whale activists said that the Navy's new sonar system has been responsible for numerous whale deaths including a well doccumented case in the Bahamas. In some controvesial whale deaths the eardrums of whales have been found to have been ruptured
