Roanoke River Striper Fishing
Myself and a bunch of other friends went down to the Roanoke River in Weldon, NC after an invitation by guide Mike Shearin and his brother JW in order to do a little striper fishing and camp out for the weekend at JW's cabin on the river. I personally had never caught a striper and was very excited to make the trip up from wilmington. After getting there on Friday afternoon we got the tents set up and the campfire started and comenced to doing a little partying by the river until about 1am when everyone decided to try to get some sleep for Saturday's fishing. The next day we awoke and were on the boat by 7:30am for the short 1/2 mile ride down river to begin our drift. Fishing from Mike's custom rigged pontoon boats, we saw hot action on shad and shiners throughout the day, catching our two fish per person limit by 10:00am. From then on it was catch and release for the rest of the day. The fishing stayed hot through sunday with our group catching and releasing approximately 150 stripers. To top it all off, I spent the entire weekend without hearing anything bad about the economy, pig sars, or without my cell phone ringing once. What more could one ask for. This was truely a fishing trip I will not forget. I think I may even try to go back up in a couple weeks if it doesn't look like a can get offshore as I hear the big girls will be in for some catch and release. Enjoy the pics.
