    Question Release Clips & Ballyhoo

How do you set your spread for Ballyhoo?
Aftco Goldfinger, Rupps, Blacks? Reel in free spool clicker on? Rubber bands or a twisted mainline to release?
How do you deal with the Bridge pole if there is no centre rigger?
Hopefully the Box get will chime in on this one.

OKAY ANDY...I JUST HAPPENED TO BE ONLINE

    1. AFTCO CLIPS........THE NEW VERSION WITH THE SLIDE BAR I LITERALLY HATE AND REFUSE TO USE ONE....THE GOOD OL STANDARD AFTCO RELEASE WITH THE TENSION WHEEL IS THE HEAT .....I USE THIS CLIP WHEN USING 30-130 LB GEAR (RODS/REELS)

BLACKS CLIPS.......THIS IS MY GOTO DINK RELEASE CLIP....SAILDOGS, DIRTY WHITEBOYS.....BLACKS HAS A SOFT EASILY ADJUSTED TRIGGER THAT DOESN'T YIELD DRAG TO PRESSURE SENSITIVE FEEDERS

    2. REEL IN FREE SPOOL? ......THIS IS JUST MY WAY AND NOT THE ONLY WAY....I ALWAYS HAVE THE CLICKER ON.....THE CLICKER IS MY SAVIOUR....THAT BEAUTIFUL SINGLE CLICK OF A TLD25 IS ROCK N ROLL MUSIC TO MY EARS!

MY TLD DRAG LEVERS ARE JUST BARELY "ENGAGED"......IF A BILLFISH CRASHES AN UN-ENGAGED TLD DRAG LEVER....CLCIKER ON OR CLICKER OFF....I THINK THE OPPORTUNITY FOR ONE MASSIVE EAGLE'S NEST IS EMMINENT!!!............I WOULD SUPPOSE THAT IF A MAN WAS HOLDING A TLD IN HAND.....VERY ATTENTIVE TO JOB AT HAND.... ....WITH HIS THUMB ON THE SPOOL (A THUMBDINGER.COM WOULD BE COOL TO HAVE ON AT THIS TIME )....AND MAINTAIN TOTAL CONCENTRATION ON THIS ONE BAIT.....THEN I GUESS HAVING THE TLD IN FREESPOOL- NO- CLICKER MODE WOULD THEN BE ACCEPTABLE

    3. RUBBER BANDS OR TWISTED MAINLINE RELEASE? . . . . . AGAIN, JUST MY WAY AND NOT THE ONLY WAY.......I USE A RUBBERBAND RELEASE ON MY FLATLINES MANY TIMES....A #16 RUBBERBAND ATTACHED TO THE MAINLINE AND SECURED TO A NEARBY "CLEAT" OR ANY THING IN THE VICVINITY IOF THE ROD THAT ONE COULD LOOP THE RUBBERBAND TO.......THIS IS EXCELLENT ON TLD25'S AS WELL!

SOMETIMES IF A BILLFISH TAPS THE BAIT YOU MAY NEED TO SELF-BREAK OR FREE THE RUBBERBAND........

IF USING THE RUBBER TRICK ON TLD25'S AND TARGETTING BILLFISH....BE SURE NOT TO COMPLETELY TIGHTEN THE BAND TO THE MAINLINE......THIS ALLOWS THE MAINLINE TO FLOW WITHOUT RESTRICTION. (DRAG)

DO I TWIST MY MAINLINE TO A RELEASE CLIP????? ......THE HORROR! NEVER IN A THOUSAND YEARS DUDE....AND NO WAY JOSE .....THIS ELIMINATES ANY CHANCE OF ANY DROP BACK TO A TAILING BILLFISH

    4. BRIDGE POLE....CENTER RIGGER ..... THE BRIDGE POLE , WHEN FISHED CORRECTLY, IS ONE DEADLY ASS WEAPON.........ONE SHOULD LEARN TO USE THE VARIOUS BRAIDS, BATTLELINES, SPIDERWIRES HERE WHICH WILL DRAMATICALLY IMPROVE HOOKUP RATIOS WITH THE NO-STRETCH VARIABLE ASSOCIATED WITH THESE .....HERE IS A DIAGRAM FOR YOU ANDY WHICH I LEARNED FROM THE BEAST HIMSELF....I HOPE THIS HELPS

I LITERALLY DESPISE A CENTER RIGGER....I SHIVER AT THE THOUGHT OF APPLYING A BRIDGE POLE MAINLINE TO ONE!!! A CENTER RIGGER TAKES THE RODTIP OUT OF THE GAME!!!

I WATCH MY RODTIPS MOVEMENT 24/7......ALL 7 OF THEM ....THE TWICH I SHALL CALL IT.....THE TELL-TALE TWICH THAT SIGNALS ME THAT THAT DIRTY THIEVING MARAUDING WHITEBOY IS SUCKING ON MY BAIT....TENDERLY INSPECTING IT WITH WHITE-GLOVE INSPECTION FOUND ONLY IN THE DNA OF A DIRTY WHITEBOY!

IF THE MAINLINE GOES UP TO A CENTER RIGGER.....THERE IS NO TWICHING OF THE RODTIP!!! THIS IS NOT A DEBATABLE ISSUE HERE. OF COURSE ......I

THIS IS JUST MY WAY ....MY THOUGHTS ....AND NOT THE ONLY WAY.....NOW KEEP IN MIND I HAVE FISHED WITH ....AND LEARNED FROM THE BEST IN THE BIZ

NOW FOR THE FIRST QUESTION YOU ASKED..........HOW DO I SET MY SPREAD FOR BALLYHOO.....?

FOR MY SMALL BOAT....5 RODS NORMALLY WITH A PITCHBAIT ....ONE TEASER

FOR A BIG BOAT WITH CHAIR AND ROCKET LAUNCHER...7-8 RODS NORMALLY....2 TEASERS

I READ IN MANY JOURNALS ABOUT WAVE COUNT........PERSONALLY I HAVE NEVER COUNTED WAVES ............I POSITION MY BAIT IN A PLACE THAT MAKES THAT BAIT SWIM AND DO IT'S JOB......

WITH THE MANY LURE FACE DESIGNS....ONE SHOULD TWEAK THE BAIT ...SOMETIMES INCHES FORWARD OR BACK MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE......AND MAKE THAT BAIT DO IT'S JOB!!!!.....AND NO MATTER WHAT WAVE CRAP IS GOING ON......SOMETIMES JUST LOWERING A RIGGER CLIP A FEW INCHES DOWN CHANGING THE MAINLINE ANGLE WILL ACCOMPLISH BETTER ACTION

I HOPE THIS IS ENOUGH CHIMING IN FOR YOU MY GOOD FRIEND!!

RCOK ON AND CATCH EM UP IN THAILAND!

I ALMOST FORGOT.....HOW BOUT SOME PICS OF YOUR WORLD!!!

    Andy,
On the Predator boat, I have a clip rigged to the rail near the rod holder. I pull the line down in front of the reel and to the clip...short drop but it lets you know when you have been bit, out of your way and it works

see blue line to right of camera mount...clip is on that

not a good picture of it but you can see the black clip on right of camera mount,,,sort of

Sorry about the pictures but best I have as of now.

Thank you Boxman for some great info! & diagrams....so your goto outrigger release is the aftco roller clip with the tension wheel? and smaller baits the blacks clip.

Last post from my world was the Similan trip i did a report on,When i nailed a slob GT.
lately I fished the "Chalong bay fishing tournament" we were slow to start but our boat won the Calcutta, best boat day 3 and junior angler award. not bad for a speed boat.
Sorry i didn't have a camera but will see if i can find some pictures from somewhere.
Fished Saturday with my Dad (he is over here on holiday) Martin (the boat owner & captain) Dan (his son) and Ian my friend.
We fished around a Bamboo FAD we found and had 5 Dorado (Missed double that!) and one Big Saildog caught on spin gear, Also got a 5/0 7691s deep in the knee and had to push that sucker straight though and out so we could cut the shank and release me! i guess i should count myself lucky no one planted a tag in my back!

Is there any member / Stores online that could send me some of those roller clips with tension wheel? + a set of Blacks.... i just know if i order them on-line i will be sent the wrong ones..... and of course i cannot get them here.

Why don't more people publish the truth than try and generically describe bait position. This is a perfect description of bait placement that will work on every boat.

    Thank you WAHOONBOX

Box hit it on the head, put your baits where they swim the best. This is going to require you constantly watch and adjust your baits, especially after a turn or change it sea state. The capt also needs to watch the baits and help make them swim. One of the questions new folks ask allot is how fast do you troll? Fast enough to make the baits swim the way you want, the current is going to be the driving factor. If you are trolling in the trough in a 4-7 ft sea and all your rt rigs are where the lt rigs should be, do you think your baits are pulling true. Try to quarter the sea or go head to or following, for a natural presentation. This fall the hoo and sail bite was awesome, I ran all my drags as light as I could with clickers on, just to keep the line from coming off the reel In case a dog came to chew or a sneak attack. No back lashes and allot of dogs and hoo's this fall. I will use a 16 rubber band to get my bait to pull where I want it but NEVER attach it with a loop to the line. When it breaks I don't want anything on the line to catch in the guides. Which ever release clip you use check them before each trip and lube them.

    Another question for the BOX

Marty what teaser would you be using on your small boat setup if you were fishing for a mixed bag, also when fishing a Seastar / Ballyhoo Combo do you still trim the inner skirt on this lure the same as the islander?
Thanks for the previous replys from everyone on this.

IT IS HARD TO BEAT 5-6 AU NATURELLE SQUIDS FROM 'NATION (red cork)..........AND I USE A NAKED BALLYHOO ON THE REAR

THIS BRUISER PILED ALL OVER AU NATURELLE A COUPLE YRS BACK ON THE RUN-OFF
    www.wahoonbox.com/videos/NOBILL3.wmv

I TRIM ALL UNNECESSARY HAIR ON THESE LURES BECAUSE IT WILL FIND IT'S WAY INTO THE HEAD CAVITY OF LURE AND MAKES A MESS....TOO MUCH HAIR MAY INHIBIT THE HOOK-UP AS WELL......

LONG HAIR WILL HANG UP ON A SHARP HOOK TOO!
