    Reel question

I'm a shimano fan, so this question will address shimano.

Stand up gear. Looking at the 50 TLD or the 50w Tiagra.

Can ya'll tell what makes the Tiagra cost $200 more?

It there that much of a difference between these reels?

Obviously one is graphite and one is gold, but other than that, is there any noticeable difference in these reels?

    Thanks

It is my understanding that the new TLD50 2-speed has the same drag as the Tiagra. I love my TLDs and think they are a great value. I have heard good things about the Tyrnos also. Black reels catch as good as gold ones!If your budget allows you to buy the Tiagras have at it, I would like to have a couple more Trinidads personally.

Well, I'm a Penn guy...however the same thing happens with the internationals (gold) and the GLD's (graphite)....I have both and personaly like better the graphite ones since the use and abuse is harder to notice in them....in terms of performance i see no difference....i would guess that this should apply to shimano also...

    my 2 cents

I think it all depends what you are going to be going after, and how much you fish. We have a bunch of tld25s and they've caught everything from bluefish to blue marlin. The tlds are really great reels- smooth, light, relatively innexpensive, and they require little maintenance. For most of the things that you want to do, the tld will work very well.

The tiagra is just a step up. From the moment you pick it up, you can tell how rugged and tight it is. If you will be going after bigger game, I would go for the tiagra. You won't have to worry about the reel flexing under strain, cracking, etc.

Either way I don't think that you can go wrong.

One other thing to consider is what you will be spooling it with. I don't know how true it is, but there are stories about tld spools cracking when braid has been used (as it cinches up so tight when it's packed), and braid getting caught between the spool and the casing.

Good luck, and I hope whichever you choose that it catches you a lot of fish!

Dang Paul. Did that happen of standup gear or from a chair? I had heard that the TLD don't do well in the chair or on a bent butt. I would be standing all the time.

I will only fish a handful of times offshore a year. Mostly for Yellow Fin, Wahoo, Dolphin. Usually out of OI or Maybe HI. Possibly Va. Beach.

I was looking at this way. TLD are about $429. The Tiagras are about $629. 4 TLD's would cost the same as 3 Tiagras. Buy three, get one free,. . . more or less is my thinking when it comes to the TLD's.

Appreciate the input and the picture. Would love to hear what others have to say as well.

You do get what you pay for. In offshore fishing gear this is true more times than not. Don't expect for the less expensive reel to last as long, but how much do you fish? Would you fish the cheapest hooks and line? I personally went with the AVETS, not the most expensive 50's I could get but not the cheapest.

The new version of the TLD ... TLD IIA .... are suppose to be pretty nice and improved over the originals. These TLD 50 II LRSA are selling for $379 Have not seen them in person but the price is hard to beat for a 50 lb class reel.
