That picture is a good example of what can happen to graphite under a lot of strain. That reel was probably hooked to a harness and they just dont do well like that, especially with a LOT of drag. I have several TLD 25's and TLD 30's and they have always performed great but there is no doubt there is a difference when we have a fish on the Tiagra's. TLD's will catch you a mess of fish...just be aware there are some limitations.

Love the gold reels but I have TLD 50 they are perfect for stand up on a small boat. I like the lighter reels for stand up. I have hooked mine to a harnass and never had a problem but I am not using a ton of drag 20# tops

    Byrd,
As for the picture that was posted---that was an older TLD 2 Speed which was ripped off the rod by the angler pulling back on the top part of the REEL and not the rod (as far as I know, this problem is not encountered when the reel is in a harness---only when the angler is pulling back on the crossbar). The new TLD 2 Speed "A" models have cured this problem since it is a stronger material. (You can tell a slight color difference in the reels---old vs. new TLD's) As for performance, the Tiagra's will hold more line and have more power. If I'm not mistaken the two reels have the same drag materials in them, but I will double check just to make sure. If you can afford the Tiagra's, they are by far the better reel however I haven't seen anything the TLD's couldn't handle yet (and I personally know guys who have caught bluefins up to 500+ on the "old" TLD50II). If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me via PM.

I just gor a pair of TLD 50WLRSA's and tiagra 30WLRS's. the new TLD's seem to be more beefy than the old ones but both reels are great so far, Haven't fished them yet. Those trinidads are nice too

Thanks guys. Squid I appreciate the response. I guess for a handful of time offshore fisher on a 24 foot boat, the TLD 50's will be plenty for me. Once again I appreciate everyone's input.
