After a few weeks off from fishing we finally got back into the swing of things. This year has been particularly good for Red Grouper. We have 4 overnight trips and have limited out each time. This time was no different. Weather was looking good to leave Saturday night. We loaded up the “Real Dream” (Scott’s 23 Polar Walk Around) and headed out of New Topsail Inlet. Taylor Perdue joined us this trip. Scott Erickson and I have been trying to get him to go on one of these trips for 2 years now. He agreed to come Friday when we were out to eat at Jebby’s in Hampstead. We were greeted by great seas and were able to run at 25 knots.
Our first stop was at 23 mile rock on the 12 foot ledge to see if there were any Gags biting. After a few drifts with nothing good to show for we moved offshore. Scott and I have found some good spots about 55 miles off the beach which we call the blobs. We call them these because we found some live bottom with giant blobs of bait all over them. During this trip I was excited to try out my new Riley Rod to see how it would hold up to some BIG REDS.
First fish of the day was caught by Scott. This was the smallest fish 14lbs of the day and was the only Gag. After that we proceeded to move from blob to blob limiting out on Big Fat Red Grouper. The trip was highlighted by Taylor’s two citation Reds. The biggest one hit the scales at 26lbs. and the other at 22lbs. Scott caught the most fish with 4 Grouper and 6 triggers. I finished the day with 3 Red Grouper. I am still waiting on my first grouper citation. My biggest came in at 19.9lbs. This is the second missed citation for me this year that has come up short by less than a pound. Overall the day was a huge success with limit of great big grouper and 9 triggers. Most of the grouper were caught on After School Specials. The two citations were caught on Blue Water Candy Roscoe’s.
Fishing with two of your good friends is great, but coming home with over 200 lbs of fish is even better!!! Scott did an awesome job putting us on the fish. The Riley Rods held up to whatever we could throw at them. Congrats Taylor on both of your citations. Below is the link to the video.
