R.I.P What's it mean? You decide!
Today I was like a kid waiting to get through the gates at Disney Land. I didn't sleep all night. I got up early, my gear was ready. Today was the first time I was going to work game birds over my new pup! There is just something magical about watching a dog in the field. Especially one that is new and want s to learn. At 7 months old, he's been on top of his game with obiedience and field work so I just had to see how he would work birds.
I met Big Rich at Ladywood Game Preserve in Douglas, MA at 0800. The dog was excited afte the long ride, but that was nothing compared to how he got when we teased him with a few birds from the stocking crate.
Our guide knew we were working a new pup so he would plant 1 bird at a time for us so the pup would be able to focus on the task at hand. The first bird we teased him with, then tossing it and smoked it. The dog retrieved the bird and showed no signs that the gunshots bothered him. I've shot .22 blanks over him for the last few weeks while bumper training and they never phased him. We were starting with a .410 to keep gun shyness to a minimum. We quickly realized this was not bothering the dog and it was making knocking down the big healthy birds a real chore. So it was time to bring out my slick new Remington 1100 G3 20ga. w/ some #6's the perfect upland tool. With the new gun things went much easier for us and soon the dog was charging into the thickest of cover and flushing birds almost half his size with some real gusto!
There was not going to be any birds running on him. 2-3 yards max was all that even the biggest roosters could sprint before RIP was hot on their tail forcing them into the air.
When the feathers settled the final tally was 11 for 15 on a mix of Pheasant and chucker, 1 exhausted happy pup, a proud papa with a love for his new gun, and a buddy that will likely never shoot a .410 again
So "RIP" could stand for Riptide, Rippin' into Pheasants, Roosters in Pieces or:
REALLY IMPRESSIVE PUPPY! You decide!

Good lookin pooch there. Looks like he had as much fun as y'all did.
Sure makes me miss the days growin up blasting ring-necks and grouse out of the sky. Nothing like watching the pups whole body start to quiver as they get "birdy" then lock up on point.

Thanks Guys,
He's a flushing dog, no pointing for him. it's nose to the deck, tail 1000 rpm and then BOOM!!!! Like a tuna on the left short an expolsion into the air! The most fun you can have on dry land
Capt. Eric, ya know I almost called you but figured you would be busy and wasn't sure if you shot upland. You WILL be on the next call list. The place is open till 4/1 I'd like to make at least 2 more trips.
