Nonsense, that's an excellent question!!
Single strand wire is great for rigging ballyhoo, mullet, & eels for trolling. No crimps, all haywire twists finished off with barrel wraps. The con for wire is kinking. If it kinks, it'll break, real easy. Also, the haywire & barrel wraps can be intimidating to the novice.
Cable is great for lures. However, sometimes hooks can "swim off." Meaning that the wiggling hook heats & therefore weakens the metal in the cable & it breaks. Also, fish can chew through cable. It takes a little while, depending on the species & size of the cable, but it's possible.
Personally, I use #7 to #9 single strand wire for dead bait rigs. I use 480lb. (non-coated) cable under the skirts of my lures that get hit by wahoo & bluefish.
I prefer single strand when i make my king rigs so there is less chance of the fish biting thru the wire. A friend liked the 7 strand because it was easier for him to handle since he wasn't good with the haywire twist and barrel wraps. we lost several fish and were lucky to get a few on the boat because they would chew thru a couple of strands then it would break. I lost a 120 lb tarpon beside the boat because during the hour and a half fight the fish wore thru the wire.
By what's been said, both have different uses. Be prepared, learn to use both. Frank
For meat fishing, I prefer #9 bright piano wire - With single strand wire, I'm gonna change the leader daily - whether it is stainless or piano wire - It doesn't take much to kink and break it.
Definitely get more action with bright wire vs. Coffe colored Singlestrand. If you prefer you can take a scotch brite pad to regular AFW Coffee wire to remove the coloring.
I prefer aircraft cable for heavy stuff like wahoo bombs and other heavy meatless Lures
For me most all I use is single wire. I can show you most all you need to know "B". Mono to wire is not hard once you know what you need to do. I don't use swivels with wire, but that's is me...![]()
I started with 60lb. 7strand for all my leaders but I got tired of trying to find those little crimps and switched to Piano wire and haven't looked backBrite wire period!
Foul Hook'd
Thanks everyone
ill be more specific, im using it primarily hunting large spanish and the pretty ones wreck #3 wire so i moved to 4 and its much better. Im good w. the haywire but havent had any luck connecting the small wire to mono w.o a swivel. It cuts the mono but i may not have the correct knot. May get into some kings as well if Im lucky
Just trying to weigh getting bit in clear water vs breaking off fish.
thought the seven strand may be stronger kind of like power pro vs mono. Sounds like i may be wrong.
If you are looking to do a swivel-less Mono to wire, the albright knot works pretty well - http://www.animatedknots.com/albrigh...matedknots.com
"B" give me a call and I show you how I do it...![]()
