Quick hook sharpening touch up trick

First off you should always have a hook file handy for sharpening . But if your like me, I don't have a holdzit file case ......yet. So here is what I do when I need to touch up a hook quickly during a bite or when I do not have my file with me. (on someone else's boat, staying at someone else's house where you may not want to bring a ton of stuff with you)

Any med to fine sandpaper 60-100 grit will put a nice edge back on a hook that has been sharpened properly. It needs to be an aluminum oxide paper, silicon oxide ,emery cloth or something comparable. It is not a substitute for a hook file but works very nicely to touch that needle sharp point back up.

Take the paper and fold it up to make a long flat file type shape and proceed just like you would with a file. You will have to re-fold the paper for each hook. Don't forget to color that new edge with a marker where the DT finish is now gone.

I tried this method this past week and it worked like a champ!

Great tip. Next time you come on my boat, bring a bunch of sandpaper. Once you have all the hooks nice and sharp, the teak can use some work, too!

It seems the sandpaper might be a bit more forgiving for those of us (OK, me) who are not good at sharpening and the file takes too much of the hook away as I'm trying to get a nice point. I'll give it a try next time.

I know it is dangerous and I shouldn't even mention it but I had some dull hooks once and I couldn't find my file (shocker, I know). Anyway - I just filed my hooks against my belt pulley while trolling. worked like a charm.

Poor man's diamond file: Stick some 180 to 240 grit wet & dry to a flat plastic stick (I like the flat plastic stirrers used for mixing Araldite epoxy glues and stick 180# to one side and 240# to the other). I use a file to knock the larger hooks into shape but the diamond file or poor man's version works very well to give (or restore) that sticky-sharp finish.
