Could you explain this in a little me detail I think I've got the idea but am not quite sure. Is this a briddle with the rubber band triping the planner then breaking? Maybe a short video is in order.
Also if you are running a planner on a down rigger how hard is it to trip the planner?
I'm trying to decide if I want to go with a rigger or planner rod, I also king fish and don't have the $ for both right now so want to get the most bang for the buck.

Bill, I'm going to add one more thing here, my 2 cents...
On braid, I can and do hit bottom (50') with a #3 Old Salty, the thing that I have noticed though is the bigger or heavier bait that I pull, the less depth that it goes. A small Islander will not go as deep as a 3/8 oz squid skirt with a Ballyhoo on it...![]()
Ponce- The illustration shown is for GBT using either a designated planer rod or a downrigger PLUS a separate rod for the bait. It is the same set up you would use to slow troll for kings except beefed up to 80 or 130lb gear.
The concept is the same except you're using a planer instead of a ball on the downrigger. The only trick to tripping the planer on the downrigger is you need to hold the spool until you can get it to freespool, let it go for a few seconds, and grab it again to make it stop FAST so the planer trips. It takes a little practice, but after a few tries, it gets pretty easy.
You can't tighten the drag and expect it to trip, you need to kinda make it snap quick.
tunatamer thanks, I got it the 14' with the rubber ban is just to keep the baited line away from the planner.
