Question For BOX or other JB spetra guys in the know

I have a question about making Wire windon leaders with BJ.
    My question has 2 parts

#1 - Will 400Lb 49 stran wire go into 130 JB and is there a line dia max that i can use as a rule of thumb for 130 JB..

#2 Will the Tanakas loop work on the JB spectra or is there a prefured method of making a loop in JB

Just a little background i am looking to make some wire windon leaders for shark fishing.

I have no experience with the JB Spetra and am hoping some of you guys with knowledge can save me some time and money if you have "Been there done that"

    Hey,
You can buy them allready made if you find that easier for you; Fishermen's Outfitters in Gloucester, MA sells them and you can also get them at Melton's here on the site; meltontackle.com
    Good luck.

    jwalker,
Thanks i know and i can buy them and presently use the FO windons but i would like experiment and rig my own.
I guess i am one of those guys that likes to mess around with different things and rigging my own gear is somthing i would like to learn more about.

As a comparrison I know i can purchase Spreader bars, chains, skirted hoo, etc and have, but i enjoy purchasing the components and making my own..just somthing i enjoy doing.

ON DA EDGE.....I KNOW YOUR PASSION FOR MAKING YOUR OWN RIGS!!!! THIS SAME PASSION HAS PLAGUED ME FOR 30 YEARS...MAKING MY OWN LURE 38 YRS AGO AND CATCHING MY FIIRST MAHI WITH IT RUINED ME FOR LIFE

AND THE ABOVE VENDORS ARE VERY GOOD CHOICES FOR READY MADE EQUIPMENT

I PERSONALLY WOULKD NOT USE A 49 SPLICE TO ANY BRAID.....REASON: I DON'T FEEL IT NECESSARY.....NOTHING MNORE N OTHING LESS

BRAID TO A BARREL SWIVEL OF CHOICE AND CRIMP THE 49 WIRE

INSTEAD OF 49 WIRE I WOULD USE EITHER 15 OR 19 PIANO WIRE....IT HAS NEVER FAILED ME

BUT I AM CERTAIN THAT SOME DELEWARE/JESEY /NY/OR CODDER AREA SHARKER GUHROOS CAN ADD TO THIS A LOT MORE THAN I.....

    GREAT QUESTION!!

i dont use the 49 strand because of the seperation that it can cause not ot mention the risks involved with your wire man and crew.. the stuff is down right dangerous.. if you are going to shark fish i would recommend and i know deep c will sta nd behind me on this.. i use all basils BHP 200-300lb windons.. i like to use momoi xtra hard leader and i make a bimini in my main line and attached with cats paw...

Then i add a stainless steel momoi diamond ball bearing snap swivel with single strand number 12-15 American fishing wire leader.. i used sampo 300lb barrels and about 8 -10 ft of the single strand.. that is the best way i feel.

    just my opinon.

    Thanks Box,
Now i know what have to look foward to after catching my biggest BFT ever on a bar that i rigged. Years of being hooked on rigging!!!
Somehow it was sweeter then any other BFT i have ever caught, and it was not just the size..

    Thanks for the input Box

I am going to echo sportfishingusa, and put a + in for Mono wind ons. I use 200 # dacron and insert 530# Momoi x hard, ending in a big snap swivel. From there, attach a 3 foot bite leader comprising of 250-300 pound single strand. Works like a charm. We usually (before the damn government closed our shark hole) catch 10 big tigers a day (using two rods) and have had 6 tigers on one wind on with no degredation to that wind on, other than chaf burns.

I too like to make my own gear (everything... rods, lures, rigs, hell, even dabbled in making my own hooks) so I understand your heart!

The reason I dont use cable in my wind ons is, 1 even stainless is going to rust. I tried that initially, and wound up having to replace a lot of leaders. 2 the cable is hard as hell to hang onto with gloves (I generally am too impatient to wait for the angler to close the last 15 feet, so when I can get a good grab a foot below the dacron, I grab an go!)
    3. the cable costs way more than the mono, with worse results. To put it plainly, the mono doesnt get defeated often. (had two bust.... one got caught on the motor by a BIG tiger, and the second was a tiger who was thrashing boat side and managed to tail whip the leader. The sound of 530 snapping is something to behold. We have caught more than 50 on this system)

And hear is something else you should consider.... have you ever seen what cable does to gel coat! It aint pretty.

Use 200lb spectra for that cable. Tanaka loop works fine but takes some time to perfect. Jared D raises valid points to consider when thinking about using cable wind-ons.

Tournament Cable has stranded wind-ons already to go!
