    BJ windons for sharkin

Gonna bring this one back around just because i want thank everyone for there input. Also i know some don't like the 49 strand but i have had no problems to date. And am comfortable using it. Anyway i was able to produce a few 12' windons using 200JB and 275 49 strand. I used the tanakas loop and got 20" of double chineese finger and 6' of single chineese finger.
The reason for wanting to use JB and 275 wire is dia. is i shark and tuna fish with the same gear and standard aftco roller guides on 30 to 50 and 50 to 80 pound class rods using the 400 lb Dacron windons are tight and you cannot pack the reel because the dacron and 400 lb wire take a lot of room on the spool. This is the main reason for the 275 49 strand and 200 JB. It ends up about 1/2 the dia. of the 400 lb FO Dacron windons, and i dont see a reason 275 lb wire would not hold up. and it only costs about 6 bucks to make them.

Anyhow, The first one i did was a visual disaster, took forever and looked like it was run over by a million cars, but i learned alot about the JB, The second came out 1000 X better and took 45 mins, and the 3 came out sweeeeet and took less then 20 mins. I have given the second and 3rd the pull test to 200 lbs with no signs of failer so i am going to fish them this weekend to see how they perform. I will post any results good or bad, and again thanks for all the imput guys..

    Thanks box,
I can't wait to tug on somthing toothy with them. I am more courious as to how they will stand up to the abuse being wrapped up in a rolling blue dog at boat side, more then seeing how they stand up to presure durring the fight..

    Time will tell the tale..

I've been playing with wind-ons for sharks for years. Get away from the cable, 400 mono is more than enough. My charter rig is 200 JB loop to looped to 400 mono, with a double crimped heavy snap swivel. I then use ~18-24" of 240 single strand to a 4X 18-20/0 circle hook. Its a deadly combination and we've caught hundreds of sharks with this set up without a hitch. Just watch for abrasions on the 400 after a fish (its easy enough to switch them out after every fish) Then just set the spread and forget about it. You don't miss fish or swing too soon. You won't pull hooks. On every shark we catch, the circle hook hooks in the corner of the mouth (like its supposed to) and usually gets around the jaw bone (the fish has to pull its jaws out to get free) To release the fish, pull the hook through and cut the wire. You do minimal damage to the fish. the only different thing i do for tournaments is scale back to 130 JB to stay igfa compliant. We'll pre-rig 50 or so hooks, and as you release fish you unsnap the cut wire, check your 400 and hook on a new wire and hook. You're fishing again in 20 seconds.

I tried cable wind-ons for shark fishing. I learned the hard way that they have some challenges. They destroyed the guides on my Chaos stand up rod. If the cable stays on the rollers, no problem. If for some reason the cable touches the frame of the guides while a fish is running, they become toast.

The cable works like a high speed metal file. I won't use them again.

Well guys i am afraid i do not have much to report on my windons. They did there job, but i was not able to put them through thier paces because the toothy critters did not want to play..Sat was a FAC hot and steamy day that gave us a choice of cool dirty water 68* or clean warm water 74*. We chose the cooler and it may not have been the right choice. We had little to no drift and our only visitors all day were a 30" mako pup and a 5' blue. Which were both quickly released.. My windons held up perfectly but not exactly what i would call a true test..

Hopeing to get a shot at an overnighter to the edge this comming weekend so the next shot at sharks will be the following weekend.

I have tried both the FO wind-ons and up the 530 X-hard Momoi The first FO versions from 3 yrs ago were great Then they started puting the Dacron all they way down to within a foot of the crimps This is bad as the first shark that rolls up the wire will chaff the dacron and it is toast
I have been using the Mono 300-530 This has worked very well up till the last shark event we fished We had a Thresher well over the 400 mark on When it sounded straight down after it saw the boat the Tail cut through on what looked like the 3rd hit We lost the 5' of stinger and 13' of the 24 1/2' of wind-on This was the 400 x-hard Momoi I bought a tournament cable 275 49 strand to try I like it for the size it goes through the standard afco rollers The only thing I didn't like is the loop seems short Like you I will be making my own with 200# JB with a completely doubled loop of 6' on the 275 I do an offshore loop with 2 crimps about 8" apart on the wire On the mono I will double the mono for 2' this is a just in case thing I do personally it really isn't necessary
I have been using the lighter wire #10-12 now for the 3rd season In flat water it is much less visible makes a difference Plus up here we have alot of fishing pressure and it makes a difference there as well

John, I used the FO Wind-ons for the past three years and had some issues with them. PM and I'll let you know what it was. Don't jump down my throat guys, I'm not knocking Fisherman's Outfitter. I own more squid bars and have spent more money there in my fishing career than I care to admit. But I do believe there are more than one way to skin a cat. Capt. Vin (Seaker) told me what him and Jay have been using for there Guy Harvey Shark Tagging trips is just as easy on the fish, boat, and wireman.
