could i run a planer rod with a 9/0 senator if i beefed up thr drag? i trying to keep cost down???how bout a 12/0 senator? any thoughts

No problem, but if your gonna run anything larger than a #12. I would go with a 12/0 or 16/0

Maybe with a #12 goin slow.... Anything more You will have to crank up the drag so much you are going to loose free spool and wont be able to trip the planer......

FWIW...with these types of reels, Senators, The way the drag is set up you will need to replace the anti reverse dogs as , how do I put it, they are positive in or out with the drag, not like a 30, 50 or a 80 where the drag is a slide engagement type. Will they work, yes, but it is a matter of time before you go and put it in gear and it keeps going out because the anti reverse dog went out...
