BTW I've been following the porpoises just like you said to in one of your articles, it hasn't payed off yet but hopefully it will soon.
    Hey M R Fishy,

Basic 101 - the absolute key to my long-term success has been the absolute stubborn inane ability to recognize a bait concentration in the right place and not move. I stay there I don't move I don't taken off the spot I do not follow all the boats when they leave and I pound it out. Hour after hour after hour. I am prepared to get skunked I am prepared for people to make fun of me for catching nothing but based on my experience I know that give me 10 minutes in the right place at the right time and I'll show you sheer brilliance. It's all about believing in yourself. Do not give up on the porpoise especially near the 100 line to the 500 fathoms, but remember water temperature, clarity, and bait need to be in the equation

I see these posts from several wanting a chance to fish with Tred.
Well, not only do you have that opportunity, you can have him as your captain in a World class billfish tournament. Get together and form a team and win the auction going on right here on SFC.

Check out the 2007 Barta Boys & Girls forum

As I sit here and watch Tred answer questions, I see all of you who have the Barta Tournament logo after your name. You have no idea what that means to me and what it means to the kids who need us the most. THANK YOU so much for supporting the tournament and the KIDS who TRULY need a POSTIVIE PLACE to go. THANK YOU ALL

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us. Just wondering your take on circle hooks vs J hooks when trolling for tunas with natural bait or "meat".
Circle hooks are absolutely the way to go in the future on dead bait trolling for billfish but when it comes to dead bait trolling for tuna my success rate is absolutely pathetic as it is miserable. Matter of fact, it is a disaster. If I'm targeting tuna I'm using J hooks only in a Southern martu pattern and the only thing I'm thinking about is sushi and a Shinnecock tuna sandwich and a cold Bud when I get home.

    Smaller Boats and Bigger Fish

    Tred,

I have a boat that is imprudent to take to the edge (though you have gone in smaller boats than mine... maybe when I was younger but I have three kids). Safety first.

I feel comfortable at or around the 30 fathom curve south of the Vineyard though. My question is how do you know when it is a good bet to hunt the near shore depth contours?

Big eddies and the like are not really seen that far north. What other indicators do you look for?

Brad: I will come back on the computer tomorrow and answer this question assuming my girls don't quit and I'm smart enough to get back on this site again. I believe Winslow makes the finest raft in the world and ACR the best epirbs and plbs. I have worked almost a year and a half with Winslow and they now have a Barta Canyon Edition Raft that's loaded with every imaginable life saving device including a water maker. I'll give you my full list tomorrow assuming I don't fall asleep in my chair. I'm usually asleep by this time. I'll write myself a note and tomorrow you'll have a list. My book has several very extensive checklists, get a copy of it, it will help you.
