    PLANNER ROD

DAMM I HATE IT.........THIS IS THE FIRST SEASON I HAVE HAD TO PULL ONE CHARTER FISHING..........Now the set up is the same one I have pulled for BFT the same way BOX himself pulls........Now this year I can say I hate it pulling a #24 its got so much drag on it when we get hit bamm WHERES THE FISH some times all i get back is the head of the bait sometimes right behind the hook(the bait is rigged right hook is in the kill zone)....If i back off the drag you cant fish it 5 min without haveing to trip it and reset. In the past to put the meat in the box the planner rod with a #24 take a#64 rubber band and a papper clip to a 50tw and let go = fish in the box. Now im sure that im not the onlyone that has this trouble or em I

    Charlie,
First of all, I'd back her down to a #16 for the Wahoos. The little bastards don't seem to bite as aggressive in the summer for some reason and you will miss more fish-- the Snakes and Stinkies ain't helping either.
Ya gotta be quick and back the drag down as soon as it pops (after a good half crank).
Remember also the Wahoo's this time of year tend to be on the small side too.
I know what you mean though, some days it's short strike after another in the summer---- I've been known to put the ole Drone spoon out and be done with it on these days.

If you think you feel bad, think about all those rat hoos without any lips swimming around Hang in there, they'll chew the way they're supposed to soon enough.

A MATES JOB NEVER ENDS...IT IS CONSTANT MOTION AT WORK

JUST GOT THE CALL FROM WHITEY ON THE SEA SPLENDOUR AND HE SAID WE WOULD PROBABLY BE LAYING TOMORROW AND FISH OUT FRIDAY AND SATURDAY.....SO ....I NOW HAVE SOME TIME ON MY HANDS....I COULDN'T EVEN ENJOY MY CAPE MAY BREAKFAST AT MIKES THINKING ABOUT THIS THREAD....

    LINE CREEP......
EVEN WITH A TIAGRA 80.....ONE WILL GET LINE CREEP AT TIMES. WHAT CAUSES LINE CREEP? ...........CURRENT OR EXTREME TIDE CN CAUSE THIS....WHEN THE OLD SALTY HITS SOME GULFSTREAM FLOW IT DOES ADD UNWANTED PRESSURE ON THE BLADE AND THIS WILL SLOWLY PULL THE BAIT DOWNWARD....SOMETIMES TOO FAR DOWN....

I TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS AND JUST TRIP THE PLANER BAIT AND RESET IT.......GOD ONLY KNOWS HOW MANY FISH HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES AT THIS PRECISE MOMENT ...THE MOMENT OF TRIPPING THE BLADE....IT MUST BE THE SUDDEN CHANGE OF DEPTH OF THE BAIT THAT TRIGGERS AN IMMEDIATE ATTACK.

JUST HOW MANY FISH HAVE ENTERED MY BOX FROM MY USE OF A SNIPER BAIT I DO NOT KNOW........HUNDREDS MAYBE ?....... I'M CERTAIN OF IT.....THOUSANDS? WELL NOT THOUSANDS...BUT FOR SURE A THOUSAND MINIMUM GIVE OR TAKE A FILLET OR TWELVE

MY BEST DAY WITH A BLADE DOWN: 23 OF 28 FISH CAUGHT THAT DAY CAME ON THE SNIPER BAIT ...WAHOOS AND MAHIS.................

MY BEST RATIO FOR ONE DAY OF FISHING: 7 FISH IN THE BOX ...ALL WAHOOS...AND NO STRIKES ON THE SURFACE...THANKS GOD I HAD A SNIPER ROD THAT DAY! MY PARTY WAS VERY HAPPY AS WELL AND I WAS VERY HAPPY WITH THE EL TIPPO ....25O KAHUNAS

THE FOLLOWING SEA: THIS WILL CERTAINLY PULL EXCESSIVE LINE OFF THE SNIPER ROD......I REALLY DON'T LIKE FISHING A FOLLOWING SEA EVEN THOUGH IT IS A SMOOTHER RIDE.....BUT WHEN I SEE THE EL CAPITANO CHANGE DIRECTION TO A FOLLOWING SEA , I THEN TRIP THE PLANER AND RESET SHALLOW....SOMETIMES I EVEN REMOVE THE BLADE AND CONVERT THE SNIPER TO A REGULAR FLATLINE BAIT AFTER ADJUSTING THE DRAG

THIS GAME IS DEFINED AS WORK...HARD WORK.......NO ONE EVER SAID A SNIPER ROD WAS EASY...NO ONE EVER SAID IT COMES WITHOUT TRIAL...WITHOUT ERROR....I WONDER IF SOME MATES REFRAIN FROM THIS SNIPER STUFF BECAUSE OF THE "EXTRA WORK"? .....

I LIKE TO SET MY PLANER SHALLOW AT FIRST...20-25 FEET DOWN.....I WATCH THE LINE CREEP GRADUALLY BUILD AND THAT IS A GOOD THING.....WHEN I FEEL IT HAS REACHED A DEPTH OF 90-110 I TEN TRIP IT AND REPEAT THE PROCESS....

A PLANER BAIT SHOULD BE CHECKED A MINIMUM OF 30-40 TIMES ON A FULL DAY OF ACTION WHETHER YOU HAVE A STRIKE OR NOT......

    THE BITE OFF:
IF I WERE FORCED AT GUNPOINT TO DECLARE WHAT WAS THE NUMBER ONE THING I LEARNED WHILE FISHING FIVE YEARS WITH CAPT BRIAN HARRINGTON....IT WOULD BE SHARP HOOKS...........

OH ....SO YOU THINK YOUR HOOK IS SHARP? I SAY BULLSHIT....I THOUGHT MY HOOKS WERE SHARP THE PREVIOUS 25 YEARS OF FISHING BEFORE THE HARRINGTON DAYS.....THEN I FOUND OUT WHAT A TRUE SHARP HOOK WAS ACTUALLY LIKE....THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDIN GUYS...I MEAN THE VIDEOS....I MEAN INDABOX!

OH I CAUGHT MY SHARE OF FISH ALRIGHT BEFORE THE EXTREME MEASURES DAYS ALRIGHT.....BUT NOW.....GEEZ......NOW I BLEED MY OWN BLOOD EVERY DAY I SHARPEN MY HOOKS.

BITE OFFS HAPPEN CHARLIE......I USUALLY A ASSOCIATE A BITE-OFF BEHIND THE HOOK TO THAT OF A KING MACKERAL BITE CAUSE HE IS ONE CHICKEN SHIT FISH TO BEGIN WITH.....A WAHOO ON THE OTHER HAND AIN'T A CHICKEN SHIT......HE COMES IN WITH SPEED AND AUTHORITY.....HE INHALES...AND HE AIN'T SKEERED....

PLANER RODS PRODUCE....AND THERE IS WORK ASSOCIATED WITH.....

    PRACTICE.....EXPERIMENT.....DILIGENCE....CONFIDENCE

WHY DO I CALL MYSELF WAHOONBOX?

DAMN! Well, as expected - Marty nailed it!!! I could not agree more!! It is a lot of work, requiring constant adjustment and attention - but its often a day saver/maker and is day in/day out the most reliable setup I put out. My new mate hated it and did not want to mess with it, but is starting to see the light! I can't wait for him to use it this fall when it really goes off!

    great info Box!!!!

    Marty,
We fish a 12 0 Senator with braid as our sniper. We usually run a #8 Old Salty with a drone spoon. Some of our biggest Yellowfin and Mahi have been caught with this setup. We have also had strikes that look like its going to break the rod but just snaps back and usually without the planer or bait behind it. Is there something that could stop this hard strike and lost gear? Maybe we aren't getting to the rod fast enough to loosen the star drag? We loosen the drag but the "creep" seems to come into play. Thanks for any info you can provide.

With fishing a star drag you will not have as smooth a drag start up and continous drag as with a lever drag. The star drag also does not have as many adjustment points as the lever drag especially on a tiagra (they are marked by detents on the side plate). You have heard and seen what I am talking about here. When the drag screams it is not a smooth sound but rather a up and down hum. This can be solved by rebuilding with upgraded drag washer and go to a wet drag (lightly grreased rather than a dry drag). I do think you can put alot more heat on a fish with a star drag though when it is locked down than with a locked down lever drag of comparable size.

Once your getting bit on the star drag reel, your start up drag takes a hard tug to get going before it lets out, hence the reason you have to keep it really tight so it will not creep to much. On a lever drag reel the start up drag is not jerky at all, it is alot smoother than the old senator star drags. This could be resulting in broken leaders. IE it is taking more than the pre set to get the drag to release.

Now I will admit most of the time when the planer rod gets bit unless it is a monster the fish will not take drag and you have to really be on your toes to get to the rod and back off the drag. I have had my fair share of broken leaders while planer fishing. 50 lbs drag holding a planer, 4 1/2 to 6 knots pull by the boat and a 40 lb or bigger fish swallows the bait heaeding the other way.......something has to give. That is why it is very important to inspect all connection and terminal gear after every trip and sometimes during the trip if you have a gut feeling that something ain't right.

One reason I like to find a place in the pit where I can see all the rod tips and be ready for the slighest movement that seems to stick out to my eyes is that I can be ready when I see that bounce in the rod and back off the lever ASAP.
