Hey Box, the briddle in your video works great. A NC Capt Benjie Stansky " Sea Note" out of OI showed me that set up a couple of years ago and have been using it with great success ever since.

We saw a planner rod at Bishops Tackle and they were using them at OI so we bought it(prob. should have given it more thought but figured we were on a budget so we went with it). It is a bent butt just like yours and we attached the 12/0 to it.

We fish out of a Glacier Bay and it has a platform between the engines with rails. There is a rocket launcher on both sides and we put the sniper there. It seems to be a good place. Don't know the distance b/w the tip and reel seat but I would figure around 4'. Thanks for the advice, the rubber band might be a good fix.
IN THE MANY YEARS I HAVE USED THIS METHOD .....I HAVE NEVER HAD NOR EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM YOU MENTION DUDE....I USE A 132 FT SOLID PIECE OF LEADER......NO SPINNING.

Not sure why it was spinning on us but we had one helluva mess one day so we tried the spros and it worked so we haven't tried the single leader again. One day, maybe in the next year or so we are going to get a 80 wide 2 speed with the lever drag.

    Marty-

With the two rod system you demonstrated in the video, is there any advantage to this way over using butterfly swivels. I was taught to set the planer on one rod and use rubberbands and butterflies to connect to the mainline of the second rod to the mainline of the planer, then the weight and drag of the bait slides it into position. I know it definitely makes life easier checking/changing baits when you can leave the planer down and tend one rod by yourself.

Im reading it all but i just wanted to see if I was doing somethig wrong.Baits are rigged right, watch for the bite, reset it about every 8 /10min. I might need to find a red head and change my luck As far as triping it all the Capt. has to to is when he see ya trying to trip it is knot in out of gear for a sec.

You want to trip it before the boat comes out of gear. Once its out of gear its too late, all you can do it put one of the guests on it to crank it in using low gear.

If I feel that I am going to want it up, I trip it first before doing anything else, then have one of the folks crank the planer to the tip, while I get on with the other business at hand.

If you will modify your planers as shown, you will be able to trip them at lower speeds, which will help in some cases.

    Charlie,
I'm willing to bet you have your drag a tad too tight such that you are not achieving true fee spool. This is the only reason I have seen the prevent the planner from tripping as desired.
You only have about a 2 or 3 click tolerance between total free spool and enough drag to hold the planer.
The only time my planer won't trip every single time is in a rough following sea---- every now and then I have to try a 2nd time if the boat falls off a swell as I release the reel.

Oh, the is one other thing--- a full spool with give you problems sometimes. a half spool (2/3 at most) seems to work alot smoother for me.

I'm sure Jim's method helps too, I just haven't tried it.
