Planer rods
Need some help here guys. I see a lot of talk in WAHOONBOX talking about planer rods. I tried searching for my answer, but didn't really find what I was looking for. Can someone please explain to me what a planer rod is, and where you would use it. Thankyou for the help.

Sit down Shut up And fish
A planer rod is a short heavy action rod that is designed to handle the huge drag and stress that a large planer such as a Old Salty #24 puts on a rod. The rod is usually is made using an 80 lb. class curved butt so it takes some of the stress and bend out of the rod and an 80 to 130 lb class rod blank. Most anglers use a 80 lb. class reel since it takes a reel with a heavy drag system to even be able to hold a large planer without having the drag slip when you are trolling. Braided lines are prefered since they will allow the planer to run deeper that mono will.
A planer rod system is used when you are wanting to fish a bait down deep, say deeper that 25 or 30. One of the most tipical uses for a planer rod system is when you are trolling for wahoo and you want to get your bait deep since that is where most of your wahoo bites come is deep. We also use them when fishing for bluefin tuna. Around half of the bites on bluefin are deep bites. It just helps you by being able to fish deep baits as well as surface baits.
