    Planer Rod Tip

Well maybe not a real tip but a question about a tip. Sorry if I mislead anyone.

I tried to do a search for a video that BOX put up a year or more ago, and I actually found it, but I got a 404 error on the video links so I'm asking my question here. Sorry if this question is beating a dead horse, but I need help from the guru's of Planer rod fishing.

I'm building a planer rod. I got a number 4 bent butt and a broomstick for a blank. Haven't decided if I want rollers or guides yet, but right now my question is in the tip. To swivel or not to swivel, that is the question.

The advice I've been given so far is to use a swivel tip for a planer rod. I've also been told to make the rod holder swivel and just use a regular tip for the rod.

My question - Will a swivel tip allow the bridle rig to pass through? The way I understand swivel tips, is the line comes up and goes through the guide then through a little hole that is the swivel part. Is that little hole big enough for the bridle system to pass? If not, is it better to go with a wide gaped roller tip or a regular type tip?

YES - The AFTCO Swivel Roller tip will allow the bridle to windon - No problem.

I very much prefer the swivel tip - especially if your line is creeping a bit (like it should) otherwise there is a chance you can get tip wrapped and snap it off before you know it.

I also like the fact that the swivel arm has a SIC insertand really does help to protect the mainline.

I also use a swivel for the rod holder - takes a lot of the stress off of the rod, and makes it a lot easier to get the planer off the bridle if you can turn the tip toward you and unclip the planer.

Mine has a swivel tip and I have no problems. However I don't use the crimped bridles like many do. I use the sams set-up as Offshore (Capt Mark) and make my planner bridel like a windon leader.

Hey Byrd. Don't know if you have found them yet. But check out mudhole tackle for your building supplies. The 43" amtack blank works great and will not break the bank. Comes out to be almost 48" by the time the ferrule and tip go on. They make an 80lb and a 50 lb blank. The 80 lb blank is a bit heavy but will work. The 50lb blank will do better (wish I had gone this way now) but you have to U40 rod bond and fibermesh tape to build up the gap on the back end to get it to work on a #4 blank ferrule for the unibutt. With the 80lb blank you will need a #24 swivel tip. The 50 lb blank takes a #18. Take a look at using a high style guide on the one closest to the reel so the line will not be in a sharp angle bind coming off the reel. Heavy style fuji 3 foot/leg turbo boat guides was my choice instead of roller guides. One less thing to maintain and take a chance on line break when you trip and the line flies around. With a roller it could come off track and land just outside the roller arbor and the guide frame.

Whatever you do there is nothing like coming tight on a rod you make! Enjoy the process. I learned alot when putting mine together with my brother and by talking with those here on the site the build rods.

Good info BTH. I already have the blank. It is a 80lb class blank made by Batson called the Stubbie. It takes a size 26 tip. Kevin from Angler's Envy is hooking me up with the guides and tip. He makes BOX's rods I think and I'm buying the same guides he uses on BOX's planer rods. I still don't know if I have the balls to free spool a planer rod to trip it, but I guess I won't have a choice if a fish don't hit it!! I will look at mudhole, thanks again for the advice.

BE SURE...BE SURE THAT A PLANER ROD IS LONG ENOUGH TO GIVE YOU ENOUGH FLEX AND FORGIVENESS....I SEE SOME PLANER RODS THAT LOOK LIKE A PIECE OF IRON PIPE AND I DON'T GET IT!

LIL STUBBIE....DOES SOUND JUST LIKE A BROOM HANDLE TO ME...AND YES I DID CHECK OUT BATSONS SITE

42.5 INCH BLANK SOUNDS A BIT SHORT TO ME BUT WHAT DO I KNOW ABOUT ROD BUILDING......
