You're right I am clueless about the actual rod. I always just assumed (badly apparently) they were stiff short blanks. So I bought a short stiff blank. Its the middle one by the way in your paste from the batson site. I've never held or handled a planer rod. I've seen them on boats and in your videos, but am clueless as to the rod itself. With a number 4 bent butt the 42.5 inch rod becomes close to 50 inches I think. I've never held a number 4 bent butt so I'm not sure about that either. If I need to get another blank I'm open to that. Clueless - indeed and I ain't sacred to admit it.

However, I do have the bridle rig the best to identical that you have preached. Got the 80 wide like you preached. Going to turn the first guide backwards like you preached. Hell, it was your preaching that got me all fired up to even get a planer rod to put in the spread! I may have missed it, but I do not remember you talking about the actual rod itself. If I missed it, its on me and I apologize for not remembering.

Hey, if you're blood sugar gets up to much let me know, my wife and oldest daughter are diabetic, I can send you some supplies if needed

More flex in the blank, okay got it. Maybe I need to go back and look at what BTH suggested.

Aftco swivel tip, unless you are going to use anything over a 1.6 crimp. I switched over to 250lb stainless cable bridle, Marty forgive me, with a 1.6 crimp and have never had a problem, in and out of the guides or never breaking a bridle after months of use charter fishing. I know of a few Capts that have switched to cable and love it. As for the rod blank it needs to have some flex. Fish 4-6 ft with a swell and cleat off your planer with 130 a 16 planer @ 5.5-6knts and see how long it lasts. More flex is not going to hurt you, less might cost you.

For what it is worth, I have 2 planer rods - both with #4 Aftco Unibutts - 1 is an 80 Stubbie and the other is a 50 Stubbie

With the unibutt attached, both rods come out about 6 1/2 ft

The 80 will flex just fine with a #16 planer but it does seem a bit "slower" when something bumps the bait... For that reason I prefer the 50 Class blank - It is a lot easier to see that little bump that just might make your day...
