    Planer Rod...Should I Be Concerned?

We will be using a planer rod for first time. I appreciate all the help with threads/videos concerning this application.

If there are hookups on the other lines in the spread. Do you all keep the planer in the water or not? Concerned about possibility of lines crossing it at some point. Thanks, Tim

The planer will need to be tripped ASAP before the boat slows down and it must be brought in to keep from fowling the hooked fish, not before I make sure I give it long enough to get hit

You can leave it down if its not a big fish.

However, I would recommend bringing it up. If your leadering the fish and he gets wrapped up with it, there is a good chance you will pop the leader on the planer line and possible pop the planer rod line as well.

If you don't trip it before the boat slows down you will be cranking the planer in all the way. That is not fun.

Packing the spectra is all about getting the initial few hundred yards TIGHT as hell, almost like a cement foundation for the spectra to sit on. After that, make wild cross to cross patterns, not straight on, so when it looks to dig, it will hold itself up and out of the spool. I believe Marty uses battle line which is available from one of the guys on here, imho Jerry Brown is nothing more than the name everyone knows, not a wonder product, there are plenty of options out there.
