    Planer rod question

    Tiagra 80 WA..check
    Can/will a seeker 80 IGFA stubbie 3'-7"work?
Unibutt- 80 class? - short curve or long curve?
Thinking of going with 3 guides instead of 2. Have seen line/braid get real close and sometimes rub the blank?
    Aftco roller swivel tip
Anything else to know for rod construction?

    Thanks

Looks like a pretty good parts list, Bryan. I'd definitely go with the regular 80# curved butt rather than a shorty.

I'm sure the stubby blank would work, but with it you've got what you've got. I think you're better off getting a full size IGFA 80 blank, then you can select the 4' of the blank that gives you the action you like. For example, when I had mine made, Joe's way of doing it was to come back along the blank until the tip (a 32 I think) fit, then he came back 4' from there to cut the length. I wanted mine built with a bit more action so he used the existing manufactured tip (a 24 I think) and came back 4'. Both give you a 4' planer rod, but the action is different and I like mine better when using smaller planers, but it can still pull a #24 without a problem. If you want to be able to find the "best" 4' of the blank for the rod you want to build, go with the full size IGFA 80. If you aren't so concerned about the blank, go with the stubby.

I'll leave the construction details to someone who knows more than me.

    Good luck.

The next bite on a jig.
Whatever you do, make sure the blank has some flexibility. Marty tells me they are doing that with his rod. There was a time when they were being built exta stiff like a deep drop rod, however you can see the strike so much better if your rod has a little give to it.

i agree totally!! My 2 do not have as much flex as would be nice to have - I got them made before I knew the difference. They are very well built, I still like them, and am in no hurry to change - BUT it would be nice to have a "little" more flex. Ya just really have to watch it a little closer - but that may be a good thing to have someone constantly watching it.

    Bryan,
Before you decide, compare my planer rod with Bill's--- there is alot of difference. Then you can decide which one you prefer for your uses and which blank to use.
I can't imagine a short bent butt for a planer rod, but have heard some of the Tidalfish guys are using them with their Avets and such.

WahoonBox: Do you have a video anywhere showing how your set up your planner system. I was trying to pay attention on the HC Canyon but it was sensory overload.

Your IGFA stubbies will be on the stiffer end...PacBay IGFA 80 stubby blanks are what I built Water Damage's rods from. And yes they are on the stiff side. To gain more flex you can look into a solid glass blank...cut it to fit and go about your business.

How many guides? That's going to depend on your blank and how you cut it...you're a builder so you know the action will be different depending on where you cut the blank. And since you are a builder you know how to do a static test. Just buy you an extra guide in case you need it.

Troy, do have any problems with your short bent butts staying in the holders? I've not had anyone complain about them...just curious. I've used quite a few UB4sc butts on planer rods. They have only been out for a year or two...these are not your old "stand-up" bent butts.

I've build them from IGFA blanks and solid glass blanks...they both catch fish.

It's funny...about 15 years ago when I fished my first true planer rod it was based on a short 130# IGFA blank. Now THAT rod was as stiff as a tobacco stick. Times change & techniques change...but there's no denying that rod 15 years ago put many a wahoo in the boat.

Use what resources you can find here and elsewhere...but be sure to have fun building your rod!!!
