no problems at all. The only exception is when/if somebody lifts up on the thing when reeling in a pig. Course, I have had the things safety strapped to the cleat since day one - too much $$$$$$$$ in rod/reel/line for me to watch it go bye bye!!
I will be switching to the longer butts with the new boat as the shorts are not gonna work right for us - but otherwise they have been perfect for me.
I have loved the rods, I have just seen some others and thought it would be nice to have a bit more flex. That being said, on my cat I needed a rod with very little flex to make it all work out right. Mostly a preference thing I guess, and what I have has certainly worked out very nicely for me.
Long curved butt...gotcha! Will get it.
Looking at blanks now. Talked to my brother (who will be the builder). he had some suggestions too and has a few guys he can speak with for small detailed and tech questions. IE types of thread to use, underwraps and guide placement when the guides are temporarily taped on and blank is flexed before building.
I am looking at going with a blank that has some flex but can hold a #32 if need be without flexing too much. 48" seems to be the magic number. I do want to see Glenn's and Bill's too and compare with Marty's before I buy a blank.
Will do Bill. Have been over at Mudhole tackle looking at Seeker and Calstar blanks. Still fine tuning my choices. Looks like I do not have to use an IGFA type blank either. That will save me some cash too so I can put the money in the guides and butt and most of all the reel.
What are you guys coming up with for measurments from the face of the reel to the first guide (stripper- I will be using a fuji heavy duty trolling guide 3 foot not a roller)? Then the measurment from the stripper to the swivel/roller tip? This is going to give me placement/spacing of the guides. Thanks

You need to figure out what blank and the action it is going to have before even contemplating your butt guide measurement. Regardless what anyone suggests, your blank (and your reel to an extent) will determine where your butt guide needs to be. Taping on guides for your static test will 'suffer' from the same prognosis...it will depend solely on your blank.
You should be spending $25 or less for a blank. Anything more and it's a waste on a planer rod.
