Planer Rod - One or Two?

My Sniper planer rod is certainly the heat on bringing the meat to the boat. Does anyone run more than a single planer rod? Would a double create more difficulty onboard or would it double our odds against the mighty wahoo of the deep?

    A WIDE ....VERY WIDE...COCKPIT WOULD ALLOW THIS....IMO

AND I WOULD THINK YOU WOULD ONLY DO THIS WHEN TARGETTING WAHOO EXCLUSIVELY

ALL IN ALL....I THINK THE DIFFICULTY FACTOR OF TWO PLANER ROD BRIDLED IS MORE THAN MOST WANT TO DEAL WITH....INCLUDING ME

    The one that got away!
I fish two on the days when the wahoo seemed to be keyed in on the deep bait, and ONLY when I have a crew big enough to clear lines on the go.

I run these off of my 26' CC, so it can be done with no problem; especially on a bigger boat.

Just don't try to drop the second one while in a turn, and set them at different depths to lessen the chance of snagging the other one.

The way we do it is only dropping one but from what we have seen in the past is when there are a large amount of hoo's around or other critters when the deep rod goes we usally can manage a few knockdowns from the trailing fish that follow it up. Just somthing that we seen in the past ...another tool for the toolbox.

Tried it once back in sept. Ran one with a #16 planer the other with a #24. Both in swivel rod holders on opposite sides of the boat (42' silverton). You just have to be careful about not turning to sharp. The only reason we ran two planer rods that day is because we were marking a huge bait ball down deep. Those two rods caught 80% of the fish that day. I know Capt Troy of the James Joyce II runs 2 planer rods when meatfishing.

I've fished 2 planers a few times - it is a hell of a lot of work, and you need an experienced crew.

I wouldn't even consider 2 planers when there are large quantities of mahi around - just too much mess.

I do it some times but the hook up ratio seems to go down with two. You really need to stay by that planner rod to back the drag off on a bite. It always seems that the planner rod opposite the one I'm by gets hit, then I am scrambling. Plus the top bites really decrease.

I put out 2 any time sea condition's allow it. About the only time I don't pull 2 is when it is just too rough. You can adjust your planer to pull wide on one side. I'll set them to pull of the corner's away from each other. I'll use like a #16 and a # 8 for different depth's and line angle. Frank

    Planer Paint?

Anyone found a better solution than a good old Sharpie to color our planers black? Sometimes simple is best?
