    Planer Reel Set-up

What's the best setup for a planer reel assuming a 80 Tiagra,

How much mono vs braid; 600 yards 80 mono and 300 yards 130/150 braid on top?

I did a search and I am fairly clueless on this one.

    Thanks

I know people that do the exact opposite as me and prefer there method, but this has worked best for me. I fill my Taigra 80 less than half way with 100 lb mono (80 lb would work fine I guess). I then attach about 100- 150 yds of spectra so that the spool is right at half full. I have found that this set up gives me a much better mechanical advantage for the drag to hold and also lets the planer trip easier when I throw it in free spool. This is for my bridle setup only (Wahoo, YFT) and is not intended to serve as a bait rod for Giant BFT.

Spool about 2/3rds with 100b mono than 100 yds of 130 lb battle line braid then bridle finally 125ft of 100lb mono.

To add to this..... while fishing this past fall Marty got me to experiment with something for him. Take a piece of the #8 wire and put in into the crimp at the Aussie swivel connection from the braid to the 130 lb leader that goes to the bait. Did not lose any fish that are big and hit the bait with alot of drag on the reel like I did earlier in the fall. Also make the crimp connection with a lil bigger than stealth loop at the wire to mono crimp. That is from John O Sea D.

I do like the braid/mono right at half way on the spool like Glenn said. Then finished off with the 130 lb mono at 20 arm pulls long. My arm pull is approx 6'.

With that much drag I lost some big fish at the strike. Marty, Brian and John had the same problem this fall.

Ok, I keep hearing yall talk about planer bridles... my question is why? So you can remove it to continue fighting the fish? (this is the only logical reason I can think of.) Why such a long distance between the planer and the lure? I think the planers act like teasers.

Also why not just clip a planer to a cleat and shoot your bait down on a shower curtin ring?

Help a FLoridian figure out this Northern Madness!

Jared, you got the right idea. The bridle allows for removing the planer and fighting the fish wit the rod/reel instead of handlining the long leader.

Long leader - because it works. Not the only way but I seem to have better results that way.

Why the planer rod set up vs cleated off planer - you can set the drag on the reel to slip ever so little while trolling. Start out with the planer down 10 or 15' and it will gradually work it's way down thru the water column and take your bait down with it. When it gets too deep flip the reel into freespool for a second and the planer will trip and come back to the surface. Start all over again working to water column.

Hope that helps a bit - good luck!

JARED.....WHY DON'T YOU PULL SEVERAL PLANERS FOR TEASERS THEN DUDE....I PERSONALLY CAN'T AFFORD THE PLANER CUTOFFS I GET IN THE LAND OF TEETH.....I HOPE NO FISH SEES MY PLANER...MUCH LESS ATTRACTS THEM!!! THAT SWIMMING BALLYHOO 130 FT BEHIND THE #16 OLD SALTY PLANER DOES PLENTY OF TEASING....RIGHT INTO MY BOX.

JARED......LETS KEEP THIS NICE AND FUN......DUDE, I ALWAYS SENSE A BIT OF TWANG IN YOUR TONE WHEN YOU POST .....ALWAYS SEEMS A BIT ON THE ANTI-POSITIVE SIDE

FIRST...........THIS THREAD IS ASKING ABOUT THE BRIDLE SYSTEM....NOT A 70'S STYLE RIG AS YOU DESCRIBE ABOVE ....OH YES IT WORKS FINE WITH THE SHOWER RING AS YOU SAY....BUT ON A SCALE OF 1-100....THE SHOWER CURTAIN THING RATES A MERE 2 COMPARED TO THE BRIDLE SYSTEM

IT'S MONO VS SPECTRA.....YOU LIKE MONO ON YOUR RIG AND OBVIOUSLY LIKE TO FISH YOUR PLANER SHALLOW CAUSE MONO CAN ONLY GO SO DEEP ....

THE BRIDLE SYSTEM USES SPECTRA OR SPIDERWIRE....PLEASE TELL ME YOU WATCHED THE VIDEO ABOVE BEFORE MAKING THIS COMMENT ...

THIS IS NOT A NORTHERN THING.....FOR IT IS YOU THAT LIVES IN YANKEE INFESTED FLORIDA.....THIS IS CAROLINA STYLE AND DESIGNED TO EASILY PUT MEAT INDABOX

WHAT EVER YOU DO SIR....MY ADVICE HERE...........DO NOT.....I REPEAT....DO NOT USE THE BRIDLE METHOD.....I AM POSITIVE YOUR KILLBOX IS NOT LARGE ENOUGH.
