    Planer Ratios

Being new to this BFT planer fishing; What is the line out to line down ratio when using 130lb mono, on the planer rod, with a #24 planer at 5-7knts? Anyone know? I've been putting out about 120' thinking it's getting me down 50' or so, does that sound right?

I always figured that a #16 would go about 40-50 percent WITH BRAID not mono could possibly be more i'll let Box chime in on this he would know better than i.

I also asked this question last week and only got one reply that suggested letting line out till you hit bottom in diff. desired depths. I guess that would work but sounds like a pain. Hopefully someone will chime in with another way to get a ballpark estimate.

I don't have any idea using mono as most of us use braid to the planer. But-- (and I assume you meant #16 instead of #26) remember that the Ilander/Horse and heavy leader/line rubberbanded behind the leader is going to act different than when using lighter gear (say for Wahoo), i.e., you're not going to be nearly as deep with the same amount of line out on the planer. Most use #24 or #32 planers for this reason on the BFT. This is just a guess, but it looked like about a 30%-35% ratio this weekend on a #24 with an ass load of #280 flouro, 100 lb mono, and Ilander/horse behind the planer.

    We weren't moving 7kts though.

I have been running about 120' of 200lb braid to a #32 and I have yet to hit bottom in 50-70 foot of water. All I know is those are a lot of blades slicing through the water it is a wonder the fish will stay in the area with that much running through.

Try this, use a architects scale. At a 45 degree angle with 100 of line out your bait is 69' deep. At 22 1/2 degree and 100' of line out ( Which is more realistic) your bait is 37' deep. It all depends on planer size and speed.

First I would suggest switching to a minimum of 200lb. braid instesd of 130 lb. mono. In a following sea a 24 will not have any trouble breaking the mono. As sar as the depth that the planer will run, usually a #24 Old Salty on 100 ft. of 200 to 300 lb/ braid will run around 30 to 35 ft. I have intentionally left my planer out when trolling near the shaols to see where I start noticing the planer line jumping. It usually starts between 30 and 35 ft. depending on the seas. So I guess that on 100 ft. of braid it comes up to a little less than 1/3 depth per length or around 30 %.

Thanks for that Joe. I actually obtained two downriggers today to use for
the season both with 200lb. braid. I kind of figured it was between 30-50%. I was using a short deep drop rod in place of a downrigger but now
that I've got the right stuff I'll try it. Joe if you ever want to go just give me a shout and I'd love to have you. Thanks again for he info, I think alot of people had that same qustion.
    Thanks again,
    Capt. Dorian Rogers
