    Planer Question 4 Marty

Marty just watched your planner vid and i had a question for you. On my 50 International I have 80lbs dimand moimo. Do i need to re-spool it with braid or can i leave it be? I love planners but we run ours almost like a downrigger. I have 100ft of 250lbs spectra to the planner. Then using either a two-way swivel or being creative, shower curtain rings we'll let out our desired amount of line on the International. After that, with a thick rubberband we secure the end of the mono to the two-way swivel then by backing off the drag it will sink down as far as we let it. Its not a bad technique and has its pros and cons. It allows us to fight the fish without the planner but is a SOB to bring the planner up when needed. Plus we use a hell of a lot of Two-way swivels which is why I like shower curtain rings! Its a pain to wind in the planner if we ever need to (pick up and run or chase a fish). The line also needs to be stored on a spool because it will be impossible to let back out. Definitely a 2 man process. after seeing your vid I love your technique!

THE FOLLOWING IS WHEN ONE IS USING A RUBBERBAND RELEASE

YOU HAVE A LOT OF VARIABLES HERE BRO....

50 REEL VS. AN 80 REEL ....AN 80 WILL CRANK UP A PLANER IN LOW GEAR WITH NO EFFORT

IF YOU ARE DOING A RUBBERBAND RELEASE FROM THE BACK OF A PLANER .....I THEN THINK 250 BRAID IS OVERKILL. IT IS JUST TOO THICK AND RENDERING WAY TOO MUCH DRAG & NOT VERY "STEALTH (VISIBILITY)

THE ONLY THING IS THE WATER IS THE BRAID FROM MY ROD TIP TO PLANER AND IN MY CASE ....IT'S WHITE 130 BATTLELINE OBTAINED FROM EITHER JOE SHUTES (FISHFINDER) OR UNIVERSAL MARINE (NIMROD).....THE KEY IS THE LOW DIAMETER OF YOUR BRAID...IN MY CASE IT'S 130LB GOING INTO THE WATER...LESS DRAG AND LESS ANGLE....THEREFORE GOING ABSOLUTELY DEEPER!

I HAVE 100LB MONO BACKING BEHIND THE BATTLINE AND 80 SHOULD BE JUST FINE IN YOUR CASE.........YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO TRIP A FIFTY IF YOU CAN GET ENOUGH DRAG AND STILL MAINTAIN A "FREESPOOL" ON THE TOP END

I HOPE I AM MAKING MYSELF CLEAR...IF NOT I WILL TRY TO REPHRASE

I AM CERTAIN OTHER GUYS HAVE IMPUT AS WELL!

Pleast don't take this wrong but your 50 Penn will not do the job, 1 it will not get to free spool with enough drag to stop your #16 or #24 "Old Salty" planer, no if's and's or butts....
2, the 50 will not hold up to the stress...

An 80 works good for me allows me to trip in freespool and maintain the drag I need to hold a #32, #24, #16 and #12 no problem. Reel is backed with 100 lb mono, swiveled to 150 lb braid. For my bite leader I use 100lb or 130lb mono (not diamond.)

If you have the diamond for your bite leader here. Cut a small piece off and put a nick in it. Now hold it under the light. Neat huh? Almost like a fiber optic effect that illuminates the nick and scratch. Wonder what the fish thinks when they see fiber optic leader cruising through the water that is attached to the bait.

I know some folks use the diamond on the heavy marlin and BFT setups but that is a different situation altogether.

Thanks for the info guys Unfortunetly I don't haven an 80, wish I did but im luckly tohave the 4 International 50's. I love the Carolina technique but I think until I equip myslef with the heavier setups I'll have to stick to my way.

Marty We have been using 250 mono but we recently switched to spectra. I dont have it rigged to the rod I cleat it off to the transom so its only connected to the boat. Then when the planer is set at its depth I rubberband the line (tight) and attach the rubberband to either a 2-way swivel or shower-curtain ring and send it down. When the drag is set on freespool the Swivel/ring will slide all the way to the planner. When a fish hits then the rubberband snaps. (which you already know) The reason for the heavy planer line is so we don't lose it Im actually more worried about the the line rubbing against the transom rather then the tension from the planer. Do you think we cen lighten up on the spectra? 200lbs/150?

Sence you seem to have more questions, i did a surch for you and came up with this. The links work to most of the videos and I think you will see thet what we are talking about is an inline setup...hope this helps you out...

Any pics of how the planer sits in the bridle?

Awesome Vid and i apporciate the homework you did for me but I understand the concept with the bridel. But since I don't have the proper equipment (80) I'm gonna stay with what I got. Marty thinks 250lbs spectra is overkill and if i can go smaller i would like to. The system I use is different form what you guys use, it's all explained in my earlier post.

We use to used the same set up for bluefin fishing with the same concern. A way to "fix" the problem is to attatch the braid to a length of 3/8 or 1/2 inch rope just long enough to ride off the transom without having to reach too far to hook the swivel or ring. Not only will this be easier to spot chafing, but it also gives you a little better "handle" to trip the planer when you need to.

Before the planer rod I hung the planer off the transom & used the rope trick as well, I noticed the chaffing too. I threaded a piece of garden hose onto the rope. When I put out the planer I just made sure the hose was positioned over the transom. I made my rope line about a foot past the transom, worked well but the actual length may be different pending on where you tie it off to a cleat.
