If it's the braid you're asking about, we ran two with 90ft and one with 60 and just let the line out on the rod according to the depth we wanted to fish.
The "tag" over the transom just went about a foot off the back. This gave us enough clearance to prevent chafing the braid and when the planer needed to be tripped we had enough line to pull up and drop back to trip it. It all depends on the hight of your gunnels as to how long to make it.
We also tied a loop in them just above the braid/rope connection in the rope to give a more sure "handle" to grab.
Get hit, grab the loop, pull back and let go, planer trips, retreive. That simple.
