    Question Planer question...

As I know diddly about them other than adding a little #3 or 4 straight to my string for kings or just something different to do. I figured I would go to well of wisdom and gain some knowledge. Thats right the Deep is on hands and knees in the presence of his Boxness seeking advice...

I am slated to fish a wahoo tournament or two this season. I'm versed in the high speed stuff some of the guys are doing but there are a lot doing well with more traditional down stuff. The rules state five lines. The boat I'll be using is hard pressed to add any more any way. We don't have designated planer rods as such.
I was considering running #6 planer off the tips of bent butt 80 class but at say eight knots they were taking line at 22 lbs of drag. Seing that I'm considering going to hand pulled ones... I understand the rubber band end of rigging but I'm lost as to what "hand line" to use that wouldn't be a complete nightmare to pull? Is there a hand line you would recommend or is there a mostly fool proof way to trip them?

Will you post images so that I can see what it looks like> I picked up a planer kit that included a handline, but it frayed at higher speeds. Thanks, K

I use 400# mono on a #32 old salty. I slow the boat, take a few wraps and get 6 or 8 feet of slack, throw the slack at the planer and then pull when the slack starts to come tight. Planer trips every time.

I use a 5/8" double braided dock line that resides in the back storage area of the boat near the stern cleat, let out a few feet ands cleat it off with the loop ready to accept the carabiner clipped on. The actual planer line is 400# mono with a BIG stainless ring on it. I clip a stls carabiner from the dock line to the ring and let her eat on a #16 or a #12. You can pull the whole thing and toss it in the livewell if you have one. The 400# stuff does not tangle easy and is simple to re-deploy. To trip, pull up and slightly back on the ring and up she comes. (Thanks Overboard for this tip )
