Well that's how the day went or at least the afternoon to a point. Lines went in about 8:45 Am and had a
tuna bite right off the bat only to have a Wahoo come and eat the swivel while we were fighting the Tuna. Not a minute later another bridge rod screams and low and behold its a Slimy King Mackerel. From here I work into 40 fathoms and the planer rod goes off and a nice Hoo comes to the boat and its on. Working down the ledge were picking very nice Bull Dolphin (Mahi Mahi) in the 25 to 30 pound class. As I work from the deep to the shallow we got to the edge and bam the 30 wide screams and were hooked up with a 55+ pound Hoo. As we work about the ledge the planer rod goes off and nothing...I mean nothing...no planer...Old Salty has left the building...not to worry we got another. As we things back together and find another Mahi the current picks up along with the wind I moved to an inshore ledge and the planer rod goes off again...another Hoo. As I make a circle on the off shore side another Mahi crashes the right short. Make a turn and cross the north end of the ledge and move to the shallow and left long screams and goes limp then the right long...same thing. Shot gun snaps and I'm on it winding hard on the reel and it comes tight with a nice Hoo. Pass down the rod and slow the boat down...one gear only and planer goes off and limp...another planer eaten. Suddenly Flat line is going and then left short and right short and the mouse trap...WTF??? 8 lines and only 1 Hoo on, well I'll take it! Look over and see a hoo sky on the right teaser and I grab for it but the Hoo is faster than me and nails it again. We land that Hoo and slowly work back and try to get a couple of lines back in. As I work back to the ledge I here the left teaser reel squeak and look to see the teaser is gone except for 1 squid and the lashing on the rigger is broke and teaser line is every where...what a mess.
Cross the ledge to the deep side and turn back to cross it again. As I got to the edge the planer trips and comes up and. well you see the picture. Goes to show you what a Hoo could do to you. Get the planer fixed again and put back in and we get what I thought was our best bite of the day...mouse trap has a swirl and a smoke trail beside it, I call it out to Warren and he cranks it in to look at it and bam...off goes the planer with another nice Hoo. As it is getting late into the day I swing the Predator back to the off shore ledge and no love...yep I left fish to find fish...big no, no!
All in all it was a great day with great people, lots of bites ( went through 6 packs of Ballyhoo) and a great box full of fish.![]()
