Launched at 5:00am and we were underway. Once breaking through the bar it was a 35kts ride out to the 795 line. About half way we passed 4 charter boats that had the same idea. The night before I talked with Bill (hitnrun) and we were going to work from the 750 to 700. Tried to raise Bill all day but couldn't get him. Later I found out he had throttle problems and wasn't out. So about 6:30am I see a nice slick in about 40ftm. We are setting the spread out and by the time the 5th line hits the water a 35lb YFT commits suicide on a pink squid chain from PA Distributors. We put the steel to this fish and in the box he goes. We get all 8 lines in and Bam a 50lb. YFT blows up on the pink chain, drag is screaming and after a short fight comes unglued. Circled the same area and the short rigger pops YFT short bite and gone. Didn't have another YFT bite the rest of the day. So we trolled around and found a huge slick and 30 to 40 birds working it hard and I was basically alone. Trolled though it and bagged 5 gaffers in short order. All went in a nice ice bath. After that we continued to work the same area hard until about 11:00am. So I decided to troll south from 40ftm to 100ftm just zig zagging and we pulled some blind bailers on the way to the 740. So at around 12 decided to troll back North and this is when the fun began! . Around 12:30 at the 770 or so here comes Whitey. He crushed the yellow boone bird chain with a pink and blue squid witch I made and after a short fight comes unglued. I circled on the area for about 15 minutes and and John noticed some 2 tones going off. I move towards them and here comes Whitey # 2 he crashes the same bait and gets stung and he is gone. Now I am getting quit agitated but bite my tongue because of a really green crew. I had to drive the boat and work the pit for the most part but did have some help just not with the bills. So after Whitey # 2 gets us Whitey # 3 comes on the bird black and purple Ilander and he gets stung and he is gone. Now my blood pressure is through the roof but still I bite my tongue and keep the faith. About 10 minutes later here comes Whitey # 4 from the port side and blows by the left flat and blows by the right flat and I never saw him again. DAMN! Well in the meantime John sees something air out about 300 yards away and I look and she airs out again but chasing what looked like a bonita or something. It was about a 3 to 400lb blue girl. What a freaking site to see. After she airs out I am looking at the spread and I see a blue one on the long shot gun. Mouth open bill slashing back and forth and then a big ass explosion and he is hooked up on my 80 wide and drag is screaming. I picked up the rod come from behind the helm and began to fight this fish and then the in evadable happens leader chaffed and he goes on his marry way. Est. about 200lbs. Now I am completely drained by the lack of experience on my boat today. Well at about 2:30am I decide to pull the plug and try to beat the storm that was looming in the distance. Got about 15 miles to the inlet and all hell breaks loose. Hail, wind, rain sideways and lightening. Well we pushed through at 8kts and broke through the other side and continued on at 28kts back to O.I.. I would like to thank my crew John (the original Jackass) Eric (little Jackass), Bradley, Eddie and Seth. I forgot the last guys name hell Alzheimer's is setting in. One thing to add I did set the planer rod down and after 10 minutes I get cut of by something. Planer gone, Matanza gone and 130 yards of Momoi. I lost today about 250.00 in tackle ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGG! Oh well no biggie!
Final tally:
1 for 3 YFT
11 for 21 on Mahi
0 for 3 on Whites
0 for 1 on the Blue one.
I do have pics but Eric hasn't emailed them to me yet.
