My father came from Greece (Cephalonia) and I spent my youth immersed in the Greek culture (and Church) so this thread means a lot to me.
I spent a few days on the water in Greece fishing in a similar way as you described. Things are very different there and after spending some time in Cephalonia I learned why they don't waste any part of the fish. (those heads make great soup !) |

Sitting here at work, i wanted something good to read and thought of this thread. A great story and worth reading over again and again. You almost feel like you know the old man when you get done.

Thank you eppefour. I'm sure that the old captain thanks you as well. Believe it or not I thought about him a lot this afternoon while I was out on the water. Still miss the man.

I did, however, get to tell him about it on the phone a few days before he passed on. He was very sharp on that particular day and when I told him I could sense a mix of pride and embarrassment from him. He asked how did you know of him and I told him that it was through these stories. Speaking to himself he said something along the lines of "imagine fishermen on the other side of the world know about me and my boys!" and asked me to thank you for the honor. That was the last "functional" conversation I had with the man. I hope God has forgiven him by now and he's back at work harassing Paradise's fish and pretty women. SeaBiscuit |
