Pics from the weekends shark trip

As mentioned earlier this week, went sharkin... had a bad day. Current and wind caused our first attempt at drifting to be a bust. Just wanted to post up a few of the pics from the trip. (Snapper was caught the day previous on a bottom trip, just thought it was post worthy)

Thanks all. Unfortunately, that was the worst trip we have ever had to that spot. Usually, we have a cooler full of cobia, and atleast 4 or 5 tags in sharks.... usually a lot bigger than that.

BUT, then what can you do? The gove says "no anchoring here!" so we now have to find a new way to get old results. Kind of reminds me of the post about the guy who was wanting to get into commercial BFT fishing. Its not that the fishing is hard, its the damn Government making stupid rules tying hands. I am afraid the "greener" america gets, the less anyone is going to be allowed to actually enjoy the out doors.

The snapper weigted 27#s according to the Captain. They had a mess of them too.... but that was Mr. Big of the day!

We have something funny going on here this year. Usually this time of year the snapper and grouper are 30-40 miles out in cooler deeper water. (100 foot +) This year, we have such a strong thermocline, that the surface temp is hovering around 82-84 and below the cline we are seeing bottom temps of 68. It has made for an amazing summer of snapper thus far. The captain has also been nailing some nice black bellies within 15 miles, which is really odd this time of year.

A buddy of mine caught a limit of snapper 4 miles out in 45 feet of water. That is something we usually only get to do during Nov and Dec. Hell, apparently a boat limited on Snapper and caught 2 keeper grouper at the Mayport Jetties last week. Odd, odd stuff this year! Also seeing a lot of snook caught here in Jacksonville. Those usually arent seen above Daytona. Its been extremely odd.

Any other locations seeing crazy stuff?

Funny that you mentioned the "odd" stuff this year Jared. NC never really got a spring run of yellowfins this year and we went into a summer offshore pattern (dolphin and billfish) in April rather than the more typical late May, early June time frame.
Atlantic bonito came and went before most noticed.
In terms of bottom fish, some encouraging snapper catches so far this year, as well as decent "inshore" gags, but overall not as much of a fish movement as typically seen in the spring transition.
Hardly any spring black sea bass
More of a "too warm too soon" type of pattern for us.
    Cheers,
    SeaBiscuit
