Phin Dawg Fishing Report with Pictures
Last Thursday 3-18 got a call from from Capt Kenny that he was going to be in Hatteras on the Phin Dawg for the flat calm seas that were predicted. Flat calm on the weekend? What are the odds? How could I possibly turn that down?
Made the short drive from Raleigh on Friday evening where I met the guys down in the village. The plan was to head up toward the east where I fished the Wednesday before and had done well on the bluefin. (See Poledancer OI Report)
Besides the pretty weather and good fishing I was really looking forward to fishing on the Phin Dawg, Kenny's 35 Everglades center console. Just for the record, I had never fished on an Everglades but let me assure you that it was everything that I thought it would be and then some. Solidly built with incredible fit and finish, as well as possessing every bell and whistle you can imagine. It was a offshore fishermans dream.
We left the dock early the next morning and fell in line behind the other numerous boats heading out the inlet. (Not sure what the name of the smallish sportfisher that had no lights on but you may want to get that fixed before someone rides right up into your stern.)
Once we cleared the inlet the Everglades made short work of the 28 mile run to just outside the tower where there was only one boat fishing. Cruising along at 40 knots will usually put you ahead of the crowd. We deployed the spread of witch/ballyhoo combinations on 150lb fluoro with hopes of hooking a 400lb plus bluefin. (Stopped at the Sandbar for dinner and heard that there were some bigger ones caught on Thursday)
Anyway, lines in in the 70 degree water and continued trolling east toward the 100 fathom curve. Shortly after arriving there we had our first knockdown. It didnt take long to realize that this was no giant. 10 minutes later we had a nice 40lb yellowfin in the box. Definitely not going to complain about a catching a yellowfin. Continued trolling east/northeast when we had a double of yellowfin. At that point decided to add a couple of light lines to the spread and it didnt take long to get a triple knockdown. Boxed three more and then circled around working our way back toward that spot. Before we could get there seven lines go down. Managed to get five of them in the boat while pulling two off. By then it was almost lunch time and we were concerned that we didn't have enough ice to care for the fish so the Capt makes the call to pack it in.
Pointed the Phin Dawg toward the west and enjoyed the smooth ride back to HI. Great group to fish with, Kenny, Harry, and Tara.
Back at the dock we got the boat cleaned up, and cleaned and iced the fish for the ride back home. Thanks to Mike from Williamsburg for the help. Got cleaned up and watched the other boats arriving back at the dock. Did see several SFC members around the docks. Usual suspects; Tat Tuna, Codfather, Still Think N. Sorry if I left anyone out.
Had a nice dinner at Dinks and left the next morning. Wished we could have fished but unfortunately the Capt had to hustle back home as his nephew was in a serious car accident. Prayers to him as he is facing a long recovery. Anyway, thanks for listening and am looking forward to getting back down there as soon as possible. Take care and tight lines.

Nice report! I fished with Kenny in the WMO on the Everglades 35 and can agree with you - that boat is a tank. We ran out with the Viking fleet on the last day and in sporty weather passed all the Vikings - except the 68 which blew by us. The Everglades can handle large seas and has a really soft landing!
Please tell Kenny I am dissapointed he is not wearing his Alltackle hat in the photos. I will have to reconsider the sponsorship offer I made him

I will tell Kenny what you said. BTW he did have AllTackle stickers and paraphanelia all around. I meant to ask him about it.
Codfather, I saw you at Village Marina unless there is another Codfather boat.
