If you want a Mac, get a Mac. If you want a Vista or XP system go with the Thinkpad, period. I've been in this business for 25yrs and sold them all. Its the best of the rest. I might be able to help you out. Let me know if you are interested and we can discuss your needs offline.

Prices differences are crazy. What programs will Poneytail need for her work? What screen size? Definitely buy the laptop online. Outlet will go over 123141 useless stuff that comes with it that will do any good.

Fancing too much just causes extra cash and most of the stuff is unnecessary. I got an HP Pavillion and got some college programs on it, poker, fishign charts, programming stuff and runs perfect and the screen is awesome. Nice hard drive and very fast. Toshiba is good, but damm expensive. I learned the hard way that paying for a 2k computer is useless. The hp cost me 600$ and does all the work perfectly with nice ram and hd. I am yet to have a problem with it. Very nice looking laptop and tougher (both fell a few times too many) then my toshiba. Apple is fancy looking thing that just looks good. Dell computers are not worth it in opinion. It is better for programming other then that is just colors getting people.

It is better to spend less now and get another new 2 or 3 years from now. A 2k$ computer will have a resale much lower then its original price so no point. Screens are getting better everytime as are speed, etc...

A Tiagra will last you years, while a computer will get outdated and will be a ugly thing to look at in 2 or 3 years when everyone is getting new and better ones at very low costs.

    Like fishing, keep it simple

That being said, HP pavillion all the way . Cheap, works fine and looks good.

Gota know more info about what Poneytail will use so I can suggest something

La Gringa,These are great computers they are expensive, but I use mine everyday in a construction enviroment, and have dropped both several times and have had no problems with them, except,if it falls on the side w/your wireless card, have had to get a couple replaced, but no computer problems from dropping it.Used my last one for over 3 yrs.And have had my new one for about a yr. and notta hitch one.(I shouldn't have said that) I will never buy another Dell, the desktop I have @home crashed and I spent almost 3 hrs. on the phone with BABLASHAKA or something like that, and finally got it fixed.....If I buy a new one for home it will probably be a MAC,never used one,but have heard great things about them, plus I hate MICROSOFT!!!!

We had some marine surveyors here a few months back and he had a Toughbook. It was awesome. He had some customization done to it, but not much. It was waterproof and shockproof. It fell off of the dash a couple of times, took spray all over it, and when we got to the dock he even put it underwater to show me how waterproof it was. But they're definately not cheap.

the last laptop you'll ever have to buy. I've had mine for going on 3 yrs now, water proof, dust proof, sand proof. I've had this tank in some really bad environments and NEVER have had a problem.
I've got the M330 model with a sunlight readable touch screen, removable hard drive and a bunch of other bells and whistles. The newer version is the B300 but they also have the M230 which is not as heavy.
I dont know if the Poneytail will be traveling a lot for work, but these things are tough as nails. I've run this thing on sketchy power supplies, car batteries and solar panels.
    They are a little pricey.

So I was in the market for a laptop before going overseas. I went tobest buy just to look (2002). They had a fujitsu there and the salesman said it was junk, a no name... I came home did a little research and they are by far one of the largest IT providers overseas. So I bought one directly from them (refurbished lease turn-in). I took it on the ship and I went along with me to 15 countries, droped on the flight deck, survived rain, sand storms, and well straight up Marine abuse!
It is still running strong today, although a little slow by todays standards. My work has provides me a laptop now and I am on my third HP in four years. My sister in law is on her forth HP in 5 years of college.

Don't get a Vio, if you want , you can have mine. Crashed once (had to have it reloaded) (never been droped) and if it was any slower, I would go back to smoking again. I don't think mine has enough ram memory in it or something. Had a couple of "tecs" look at it and said thats as good as it is going to be.
Shoot, you can go and take a shower come back and you'll still have time to fix something to eat before its boots up... to much runs on start up. I do love my emachine, fast as all got out...

Having to buy a laptop every year isn't cheap either and it's absolutely crucial that i have something that works. it's my bread and butter.
