I am very partial to the Lenovo (formerly IBM) Thinkpads. Specifically the T-series (T62). These laptops are tough as nails - they have a titanium frame and are pretty indestructible. I had one roll across 2 lanes of Hwy 13 in the case and it booted right up. They are not heavy.

Also - Tiger Direct usually stocks Factory Refurbs of the Thinkpads, so you can get some great deals on them.

My dell crashed about a year ago and I got a Toshiba and it is awesome.

A lot faster then the dell and like Jersey said, I can actually understand the tec support at toshiba.

Like with anything electronic, it will be outdated 1 week after you bring it home.

    Good luck

I have a HP Pavilion dv6000 and it is the heat. Had it for quite a while and it works great. Reasonably priced too. i got a package deal from Best Buy that included the laptop, case, chill pad, accessories, wireless mouse, etc. for a little over $600.00.

Personally, I have 2 HP Pavillions and have good luck with both. I bought them from Circuit City. They weren't that expensive and have tons of memory, etc.

Before the Hp's, I had a Toshiba and the hard drive crashed. I had alot of quotes and info stored on it and it cost me as much to get the info back as it would have cost me to buy a new Laptop.

I am with Clt Capt. I have had several IBM(now Lenovo) laptops and they have been great no problems. My daughter had one and it made it thru 4 yrs at UNC with no problems. My sons made it thru 4 yrs at UNCW and it still works. When my son went to UNCW the school was pushing Dell but someone told me Dell was the Wal Mart of computers. I got a better IBM model for less money than the dell. I know 2 people with Dells and all they do is complain especially if they have to talk to Raji in India

I would say go with Dell Box, but just my 2 cents. I have a Dell Latitude D610, but they don't make it anymore. The laptop is two and a half years old now, with not one problem with it so far. I use it everyday for work, six days a week. I am always on it, because that is what we need to diagnose cars now-a-days. Whatever you buy just make sure that you get the extended warrenty. Good luck with your choice, and good luck to the Mrs. on her new job(s).

I have heard about these and am thinking very seriously about getting one. the climate here is HELL on any electronics and am thinking something built to withstand unusual conditions might be the answer.... so far i'm on one laptop per year here...

i would say no no no to HP. I have had a couple and they suck. We've had our best luck with Dell. We haven't dealt with their tech support because we didn't have any problems with them...!!! HP had great tech support but I found I was having to call them too often... my lastest is a toshiba - not a bad machine at all.. I like it but again... the dust here has salt in it and the wind blows so everything gets dust in it... for my next am going to look at the Toughbook...
