    Thumbs up oyster dive 11/24/07

Woke up at 6:45 am, checked the weather at Thomas Point Light to find NW winds at 8 knots, water temp at 50 degrees, and a balmy 26 degree air temp. Well this is gonna be a chilly trip to the bar. I finished loading the boat just as my crew arrived at the house. We departed for the ramp at 7:30 am. Arrived at the ramp to find a steady 10 knot NW wind, realizing that it was going to be a cold 12 mile run straight into the wind. twenty minutes latter we were dragging chain across the bar to find the best place to start. At this point my face was absolutely frozen! We anchored, suited up, and dropped in. The water was like bath water, compared to the air temp. It was a welcome relief. an hour and forty minutes latter we collectively had two and a half bushels. Also recovered a ghost pot with a half a dozen live crabs in it. Finished culling them over the bed and headed for the barn. wouldn't you know the wind shifted to the south so it was again a twenty minute bone chilling run into the wind! On the ride back we pasted no less than 2000 geese. All in all a good day with friends!

Matt, we were on a bar (whose location will remain secret ) that is littered with rocks and boulders ranging from 6" dia to about 3'-4' dia so it makes tonging (and dredging for that matter) difficult. That's what makes this bar so valuable to us. It is only accessed by a few people that know its location. Therefore, they are fairly plentiful. The depth ranges from 12'-17' with the majority of the clusters happening in 13'. The other thing that is interesting on this bar is the clustering of the oysters. You can swim 8' and see no oysters and then in the next 8' diameter you will find multiple dozens of oysters. Very differently then some of the other bars I ave dove on.
