Oregon Inlet report from Saturday 3-31-07

Sorry for not getting this out sooner, just got back!!!

We launched at 5:45am, followed the fleet out through the maze of uncharted lobster buoys and large plastic jugs which is referred to as the Marina Channel. I kept looking at my plotter and shaking my head, I said to the crew “hang on, based on the plotter were going over an island!”. Thank goodness the fleet knew where they were going.

Once we cleared the inlet everyone shot in different directions. Some went North, there was talk of blended blue green water, some went due East and a few of us went Southeast towards the point. There was a lot of chatter at the ramp, however I had done my homework and I was sticking to my plan. We headed 15 miles Southeast of the point in search of 68 degree water.

About an hour or so ride we found it and had lines in just minutes later. Before I had the 5th line in the port side long went down and a screaming. Everyone still a little blurried from the early morning ride out kind of paused… And looked at each other with the look of deer & headlights so yelled “Shit, don’t everyone fight over it” 15 minutes later we had our first Blood of the year on the deck, a 44 pound Yellowfin!

We followed a heard of dolphin. My guess is close to 150 dolphin in the heard and landed several smaller 35 pounders. We headed north about 12 miles SE of the point when the planner rod took off, we fought it for 30 minutes, it took more then we could recover ( I was using a #4 old salty on a 50 wide Penn). Shortly there after the line snapped in the middle of the 132 feet 80lb leader, ugggg…. Good Times!!!

We release 3 YFT and one mean 5 foot Mako (we left him with a lower lip piercing and some jewelry to go with it )and kept 5 YFT ranging from 35-44 lbs…

    Here’s the scorecard:

5 YFT were caught on - Lure used was a Blue & Crystal Sea Witch (built and assembled by non other then the great John Seafood, “Thanks John!!!”) Caught on the surface long and short. Also, a shout out to #1 Gaff Man, thanks for the weight rigging tip, worked like a champ!!!

3 YFT & the Mako were caught on the planner rod rigged with Box’s bridle; Lure was red and black islander w/ meat and I sent it WWB.

The day was great, Fantastic Weather and Great Company!
