Sadly our government(ie: people...well sorta) is screwing us the most.

The last refinery to be built and go online in the US was in 1976.

building a new one would require close to 800 permits and an investment of anywhere from 2-4 billion. 2-4 billion with a long term industry return rate of approx 5%. Hell a CD can get you 5%.

Our bureacracies have entangled themselves so much into the dealings of free enterprise in this country it's easier to sell a business or just plain give up then it is to make a profit.

Our children are being taught that polar bears are drowning in the arctic and caribou are running around covered in oil.

WE are to blame before any far off sheik sitting around the dung heap we call the middle east.

You think it's bad now? Just wait, and don't forget to check your garage for theives before you look at your neighbors.

This country has a lot of fixing to do and I'm afraid it doesn't have the BALLS to do it.

Oil being traded as a commodity makes it worse.Every time someone in a oil rich country sneezes traders use it as an excuse to run up the price. They run the price up on gas and when the oil price levels out the price doesn't come back down seems criminal to me.

    Well said Dave

It takes 8 years to build and permit a power plant in the U.S. that burns mass emmissions coal.

It takes only 3 years to build a Nuclear Plant that burns much cleaner.

Problem is no one wants a nuclear plant or coal plant anywhere near THERE home

We have automobiles that can get 70 miles per gallon...problem with this is it costs 16K for a new Honda Civic and 21K for the same one HYBRID....

If the U.S. govt gave a tax incentive for everyone who purchased one of these vehicles ...say half of that cost...then they would fly off the shelves like mad.

There's enough oil under the USA soil to render the middle east pointless to us in terms of oil....But wait...wars push the economy and prime the buy offs on the hill and keep the good old boys at work making millions doing "govt contracts".

The unfortunate thing is just like the wake up on 9/11, the US will have to go really far down the tubes before people wake up and DEMAND that the elected actually do things to help this country and not to sell it out from underneath us

It was $3.29 last Sat now its $3.35. The red stuff is looking good. Either that or I might switch to french fries or egg rolls.

Yes, that oil field was found over 2 years ago. They made it sound like it was something new. It's great that the oil is there but it's gonna take years to get some of that.

Back in 2003 (I think) they found a large natural gas field. The government said in 2007 we are going to be producing (insert number here) millions of cubic feet of natural gas. It's gonna take a few more years...

If that really happened we wouldn't be in the middle of a "natural gas crisis", with people talking about 20-30% raise in natural gas prices... and what a coincidence, a "large oil field was found".

By the way gas is at $5.45/gallon here.

Ethanol also is not cheap here in Fortaleza. They probably use all the local sugar cane to make "cachaça".
