    OI warning

If you tow to OI be aware they are targeting boat trailers for inspection. If you have a boat over 4,000 lbs it has to have brakes. It doesnt matter if it is a single or double axle. They did away with the light blue cars that do inspection and merged them with the state troopers. Several single axle boat owners have been ticketed this weekend. Weigh your boat! They are also giving out tickets for people towing boats that exceed there license plate limits. A normal plate is only good to 4,000 lbs. After that you have to have weighted tags know as commercial tags. Then you have to weigh your vehicle as well as the boat. this will give you your total weight. If you drive a diesel vehicle your weight will be somewhere around 8-9000 lbs. If you boat weighs 11,000 lbs you need to have your license good to 20,000 lbs. It cost 331.00 in nc each year for this m

This has been an issue since the FLW Kingfish tourney in Atlantic Beach. A bunch of these guys were rolling through town and over bridges with flagrant weight and wide-load violations and gave a couple staties a hard-on for record ticket opportunites. It started a wild fire of jabber amongst the troopers and it has only spread. Be careful. The fines are stout.

I was warned about this from a friend of mine who is a trooper on a trip with my Contender from Chapel Hill to A.B. I upped my weight on my plate to 25.000 and had no problems from the blue lights.

I understand going after the 13 foot wide, quad outboard Hooters boat with no wide load permits but to target the trailerboat fishermen as a whole is rediculous. The amount of revenue that comes to town with these boats is what writes the paychecks for the town jobs.

Do you have any more details? Location? I guess this was on 64 between Plymouth and Manteo. I have been sending all of the representatives e-mails about this. They are supposed to take it up in the short session this May. Here is a link to the state senators e-mail:

and here is a link to the house members:

Weighted tags do not bother me. What bothers me is if you tow over 10,000 lbs. you must have a class A or B liscense. Also, if you are over 8'6" wide, you cannot tow in the dark or on weekends. This is nuts because campers and fifth wheelers are excempt as recreational. For years, the unwritten rule in NC has been that recreational boaters are exempt as well....but now, the HP needs more money.
