WHat about Hatterass? Obviously they are cut off with only the Ferry for access, but what about the marinas and local businesses?

I talked to a friend that runs a hotel in Buxton the southern end of the island faired well. They are cut off and power is being supplied to the villages by generators no cell service and limited internet. It sounds like the real damage was from Avon north. They are not sure when they will be able to get residents much less visitors back on the island. I know Teach's had minimal damage and would suspect the other marinas were the same. She said that some of the residents were chartering planes into Billy Mitchell to get back home. The sad part is the f*@#ing environmentalist are trying to stop them from filling or bridging the breaches/inlets.
I saw a post that Jay Kavanagh made today. Internet has been restored and some power. Their home and the boat works are fine, a lot of cleanup to do.
the enviroment wackos need to put a cork in it... if you get the chance tune in to beach 104.com and listen to thier broadcasts.. it will make you sick what these poor people are going through..
The breach in Mirlo is on US Fish and Wildlife property. At the present time, they are not interested in filling the inlet. The current plan is to place a temporary bridge over the inlet until they "look" into it further.....this is the latest news
Took a skiff ride with Seth down through the cut, the old inlet, and the new inlet just north of the true OI inlet. What a change !! It is a change for the better. The crack is just fine we measured 7-10ft the entire way from the first turn to the fishing center from Wanchese and from the fishing center to the main channel before the bridge. The spit on the north east side of the bridge is gone. In fact the land to the north and east of the bridge has been pushed back north almost 75 yds. The inlet including under the bridge is at least 15-26 ft as far as before the bar. We did not venture all the way out to the bar in the skiff. You can run pretty much a straight shot from the bridge out to the bar now.
Here are a few photos....
This is just under the bridge looking north. You can see how far the beach is away from the channel.
These are photos of the new inlet north of the main OI inlet. We went under the bridge north of the span and went all the way to the new bar in front of the new inlet. we did not venture all the way to the bar but you could get out into the ocean trough the new inlet. (For now anyway!) I guess it will fill in at the mouth over time. The water depth was 5-6 ft all the way out....
Looking toward the ocean through the new inlet.
Heading toward the ocean in the new inlet from the bridge.
You can see the bar and ocean in this photo.
Looking back toward the bridge from the mouth of the new inlet.
Looking north towards Nagshead near the mouth of the new inlet.
Looking back toward the bridge from the mouth of the new inlet.
These are photos from the OI fishing center. OI fishing center looks rough. All the decked walkways are gone. All the electric hookups were gone. They were putting a new roof on the fishing center and the electricians were there working hard. Hope they are able to be up and running soon. Boat ramps are closed...Mark

Thanks for the update. Glad to see that they are getting the Fishing center back together.
those are some good shots of the new inlet. with the road opened up maybe someone will post some more and it might show the changes after the low fronts that pushed thru. i wish everyone a quick rebound from the storm.
