Capt. John - Yep, that Kauai Channel can get real nasty! Kamehameha never made it over to Kauai in his conquest of all the islands and that channel is why.

Us small boat guys usually only go beyond Oahu's Kaena Point into that channel on a decent 15-20 kt day and I've been closer to Kauai than Oahu only to find out the weatherman was wrong again when the whitecaps kicked up. It's a long tough slog back to Waianae when that happens, so I know what you mean. Thankfully I've yet to be christened by a rogue wave and I hope to never see one; the usual waves are bigger than enough for me most of the time. Having the tops of whitecaps break over the side against the cabin and into the cockpit while throwing spray over the bimini ain't no fun.
