    Offshore MHC 9/25

With the weather looking decent and the reports of more Hoos chewing I was determined to get a crew and head out on Sat. Crew was me, Mike, and Max our new Canadian exchange pilot who had never saltwater fished.

We busted the inlet bright and early and slogged our way out to our planned area. We had our lines in the water not long after sunrise hoping for the early bite that just didn’t happen. It was pretty slow for us we had 1 short strike and a decent Hoo that met steel. Both bites came on the planner rod. Max got to catch his first salt water fish and his biggest fish ever which was cool.

Later in the day we met up with the Merry Marlin crew and did some deep dropping. We didn’t get any groupers, but end up with some more meat in the box. I believe at the end of the day we had caught 7 different species of fish. Max also had a great time bottom fishing.

Overall the day was a little less productive than I had hoped, but we had a great time and put some fish in the box. Max said he really enjoyed his day and wants to go again , that is always satisfying.

    Max with his first Wahoo!

It is always nice to put dinner in the box and even better to introduce a newbie. Glad you got out.

Jeff I'm glad you managed to get a Hoo. Thanks for those beautiful custom made heads, one was close to giving us the targetted specie but that nice fish will be around for someone else!
It was great meeting up with you and dropping some deep baits down together. We'll have to do it again and hopefully the bite will be a little hotter.

We saw you guys out there running side by side with the MM crew out by the NE corner. We were the sportfish dragging around the green anchor ball a bit up the edge from you guys. We were a couple grouper short of a limit and got some of those hubcap size triggers, beeliners, sand tiles and such.
The current was honking and the fish weren't stacked up but it was still a fun day on the water. I tried to get a shot of you guys running together, but, my camera was in the salon and by the time one of the guys handed it up to the bridge, you guys were stern to me which wasn't a good picture.

Nice job on the hoo !. My crew had fishing A.D.D. and wouldn't stand for trolling for more than an hour before they started tapping their feet , begging to break out the jigging rods and to put the trolling stuff back on the rack.

    No problem Kevin.

    1. If you fish in NC you should have a planer rod as one of the weapons.

    2. Kevin builds fantastic rods and if I was in the market for a planer rod he would be my first stop!
