OBX WARNING REGAURDING DEQ! VERY SICK WIFE! ..... UPDATE Aug. 19th
Visited the little beach behind Jockeys Ridge last Saturday (10-7-2010) to enjoy the shallow warm water with family. Approaching the beach we notice a sign stating high levels of bacteria in water and swimming not recommended. Hmmm, thinking that sign has always been there and we haven't noticed it in the past. This beach is part of Jockeys Ridge and park rangers keep an eye on things as lots of families and small children use this area for the sandy beach with lots of shallow water. When the ranger came by I took a minute to discuss the sign and he said it went up 10 days earlier by the DEQ after water samples showed unhealthy conditions. I figured tides would flush things out and he replied no it doesn't work that way. Heavy rains wash the runoff water in from populated areas N and S of the beach and it just stays there. Health problems would be like food poisoning for 4-8 hrs. Our 6 year old neice was a human water spout for 2 days without problems before we saw the sign.
Monday my wife feels chilled while in the grocery and store and grabs a thermometer, driving home she is 101*, thinking she will get over whatever it is goes on with ibuprofen and later has a temp close to 104*. Thursday night was not good so she see's the DR and has blood work done and he says she has signs of walking pneumonia and puts her on antibiotics. Last night temp hits 104.3* before dropping and now around 100* with meds. Dr. called and confirmed elevated wbc meaning bacteria infection and pneumonia to come back Monday if not improving and call Dr. on call if getting worse.
This realy sucks and would not want anyone to experience this. She is supposed to run the Rock n Roll Half Marothon Labor Day weekend @ VA Beach. Would love to 1) see her recover and 2) make the run and enjoy the weekend she works so hard for!!!
Ran across this picture of a typical day with families enjoying the Little Beach as we call it, including part of our crew around the kayak.

Thanks guys, she has made a big turn around with the antibiotics. First nights sleep in 5 days and she actually made it down to her horses today! Not sure when she will be able to go for a run... taking it one day at a time.

Quick update
She's not doing well. Dr. gave her antibiotics for bacterial pneumonia to be taken over 5 days starting last Friday, side effects included nausea. Monday with much improvement but developed "try to cough up a toe nail". Day 5 she takes last dose and has her 1st sign of nausea. Today is Thursday and she is back in bed and nausea is kicking her butt combined with a serious cough! Hopefully the Dr. can figure this out soon. She was excited about showing her horse on Saturday, not shure that will happen now.
