    Not So Good First Experience!,

Been cutting and welding up some new hangers for the engine mounts. The owner of the welding shop had to run an errand, so I kept at it. He said theres the shield have at it. Thought to my self, well I can weld as good as the next guy. Plus I get the chance to use one of these fancy "self darkening" welding shield's for the first time. I know they've been around for ever, I'm alittle slow catching up with the new technology. So I adjust the head band, drop the shield and let her rip. Dang that arc is bright!!!!! So I think it has to be ME and keep on welding through my tightly squinted eyes. Now I'm thinkin to myself, how can this be better than the "old way"? After about 6 inches of closing the seam, I quit because I can't see a thing now. The owner walks back in and asked how was I doing? Well not worth a sh-t and I hate your fancy welding shield. What's wrong with it he ask's? I said it's way too bright, I can't see through the arc! Of course then he ask's the obvious, did you turn it on? What turn it on, you mean it's got an on/off switch? I hate "new technology"!!!! Yep sometimes it just pays to stay with what you know. Guess that means I'll be sleeping with raw potato slices on my eye lids tonight. Frank

The good news is that most modern Auto-darkening lenses provide enough protection for your eyes that you haven't done any permanent damage.

You also want to make sure that the battery that powers the lenses has enough juice - a dead battery is about the same as not turning it on.

You'll get the hang eventually -

Ouch! As long as you're learnin'! I'm learnin' too! Learning how to NOT put a wire on the right side of the solenoid! Soon as I switched it, presto!....Boat works.
Appreciate the help last night, Thank you!

Hey Frank - I bet you looked directly at the sun during an eclipse too.... just because...

And turning on the helmet is easier than turning on your camera...

i can relate to the burnt eyes from the days of stick welding in stairways and elevator shafts, some times the reflection is just as bad as straight in the eyeball. ground up raw taters cakes in the eye sockets. hope it clears up for ya.
