Crab mustard is good
Northeast Inshore Slam
Guys,
It's been a while since I've been around....between an insane work schedule and a nice vacation, I've been incommunicado. But I thought I'd share with you a cool fish story from my vacation. This happened on August 23rd. Hope you enjoy it:
--------------------------------------------------------
As was once said "It was the best of times; it was the worst of times."
We departed West Falmouth at 3:30 am, rounded Woods Hole and set the GPS to the Sword. The crew consisted of my good buddy Ted and my two sons Ben(age 8) and Alex (age 7). While the kids slept in the bow the 58 miles slipped away.
Lines went in the water in the middle of the fleet at 7:15 am. Within 10 mintues we were hooked up. Nothing remarkable...another 40 inch BFT. But I'll take it. Tuna #2 in Ted's life. The first was 25 years ago....
We hit another one about 10 minutes later. The bite died like someone shut off the light at 8:30. We trolled around for a while as the radio told tales of very soporatic hook ups. So we left and headed back to the barn.
About 7 miles short of the Chatham Inlet we saw some birds working. Since we were ahead of schedule and my boys were begging to fish some more, I decided to let them cast. We drifted into school and Ben made short work of a big blue fish. "OK, let's head in" We turned the key and got silence. Not good!!!
As Ted and I rolled around the engine and console my boys handled being broken down and adrift with their normal response, "Dad, can we keep fishing?" Good idea. It will keep them occupied... Then, while I was hadling Coast Guard calls, Sea Tow calls and Ted was looking for the eletrical problem, we get the news... "Dad, I'm hooked up." Alex make neat work of a 30 inch striper.
Alex's response to being broken down at sea was, "If we have to spend the night adrift, at least we can eat striper sushi."
Finally we hear from a very nice local, Bob Jenkins and the Local Hooker. Bob says he is coming to get us....If anyone knows Bob, thank him again for me!!!
While Bob is zeroing in on our position, Another cast strikes pay dirt. This time we are not sure what it is...too fast for a striper....Holy Tunny, it is a Boninto.
It dawns on us that we caught 3/4ths of our first Inshore Slam while we drifted and waited for help!!!
Today, Ryders Cove found the broken wire and tomorrow we will be out again. Thanks to Ryders for all the hositality, service and making quick work of my problem.
---------------------------------
We got another day in and I was able to get my father on his first tuna out east...one other day we ran to Atlantis canyon....
3 offshore trips. Bunch of BFT, one LFT, one pissed off airborne mako...lots of whales, dolphin and turtles.........good vacation.

Glad to hear you made it in safe & the bonus you found the problem! Your boys have the right idea about life. "Fish it hard" & "Fish it often". Tom
