    New Planer Rod Owner

I am going to purchase a planer rod/reel combo in two weeks. I have a 24 capehorn which we use offshore of OC MD. I ran a handline this year and didnt like it. I have watched all the videos and read all the posts but still have three questions.
    1) Any suggestions on the rod .. the reel of choice seems to be a Tiagra 80

    2) Could the short curved butt be used instead of the long one. Dont have a chair but may need to stand up fight the fish.

    3) Does the bridle system make it through the rollers or must I use the open guides.

    Thanks
    MArk

    2) I would imagine so, but you can also just leave the rod in the holder and crank it up - It really does help to have swivel holders (or swivel inserts)
This is especially true if you are fishing with short crew. You still need to remove the planer - Takes a second person if the rod isn't in the holder.

Also - if you are cranking them in, be aware that they can come in hot, so be careful when wiring them.

    3) The bridle will make it through the roller guides, but open guides work great.

80W Tiagra is the way to go becuase of line capacity. It may have the same drag as a tiagra50wlrsa but the 80s drag will not ware down as fast and will hold up better for pulling the bigger planers.

I have only ever used a long but and I would just leave it in the rod holder and crank the fish in from there.

As for guides if really desire roller guides make sure you get the oversized Wind on Guides from Aftco. I have only used the turbo guides and the bridle system went through with no problem

Check out the Avet 50W 2 speed. It has the same drag as the 80 and you can get like 800 yds of 150 spectra and still have the room for the 150 lb mono from the bridle to lure. Bought one last year and I've been tryin to kill it but I can't. Nice reel.

WELCOME to the site. most guys use a #6 bent butt which is appox 28"... the #4 Bent comes in 27" and Short bent 22". (great for standup)...Also look for the AFTCO SHD Tips and Fugi LRSG guides, on the rod, i have had good feedback with the aftco/ fuji combos for quality.

I started out with an Avet 50W - and quickly switched to a Penn 80 (already had it) - I really like the Avet, but for bigger planers, it just doesn't seem to have enough drag. The other thing to be aware of if you are going to run big planers, or hunting bluefins, the Avet doesn't have a clamp for a 130 class reel seat... I had to machine one...

Thanks for the input. I decided on a Sniper Road with a Shimona Tiagra 80.

Second what was said about the swivel rod holder. Leave it in the gunwales and crank the fish in.
No question about ordering the rod from FINRAZOR...The SNIPER rod is the one you want.
