New NC Law goes into effect May 1

Beginning in May, anyone younger than 26 operating a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater on a public waterway must meet the requirements for boating safety education in the state of NC.

It should also be...first time boat owners regardless of age.

The other thing this will do is give law enforcement something to have leverage with driving while impaired and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

you can take this course online and receive your certificate. So....hey, I don't know anything about boats, so I'll get my buddy who does to take this online "safety course" for me.

As far as I'm concerned, this is nothing more than the state pinching everyone for a few bucks.

I'm 23, have taken my 6pac course, a couple of navigation classes in college, and have been on the water my entire life...

I'm required to take this course to "legally" operate a vessel over 10 h.p. but some 27 year old yahoo that just bought a bayliner is automatically more qualified than I am?? As far as I'm concerned there will always be idiots on the water, I don't care how old you are

That age restriction makes no sense to me and probably never will.

I agree that there should be a course everyone takes when they become a certain age (16?)...maybe that's how this will eventually develop and I'm just caught in the age gap.


***By the way, does anyone want to sell a jon boat with 9.9 horsepower or LESS? Late model, wide body preferred...
