New Conventional Surf Casting Reel Question

I am in the market for a new baitcaster. That being said, I have a penn 975, penn 525, abu blue yonder, and my favorite the old green swede abu 7000B.

So I am intrigued by the Daiwa Saltiga Surf and am interested in opinions, feedback, general comments, and if anyone knows where I can find one sub $400.

Several years ago I casted a saltist conventional and it felt like butter. The thing I don't like about the saltist now is the lever drag only option. Are the bells and whistles on the Saltiga worth it?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Frog, it is still hard to beat the old Ambassador reels, many still use them for the dependably, cost and ease of repair and still today, one of the top sellers for the surf...

Get a Newell. Aka a 'graphite Squidder'

super easy to break down and clean, cast a mile and are friendl;y on the budget! Anything in 200 range is a decent surf gear, 300 series if you are beach sharking or something....

no offense but there are much more technologically advanced reels out there that don't require as much of an educated thumb and cast a lot easier

Probably true, but simplicity rules in the Surf imho. after getting submerged, I can break a newell down in about 10min.

What do I know, I learned on a squidder.

then you have no problems with it! not everybody is that good though. And if you moved to a more modern reel you'd probably get 15-25 yards extra distance easy.

Decided to go with the NEW saltist Black and Gold instead of the Saltiga.

Wish I could find another 7000B "green swede" though.

Web site down, not sure they are in business anymore. Not suprising. Took my money in Feb and got me my reel in October (Blue Yonder).
