    need rigging help...

Gonna head offshore in search of Wahoo in a few weeks and need some help/suggestions on if these are rigged correctly...they are both rigged on #10 wire with 9/0 hooks crimped...the leader length is 6' or so with a SPRO swivel crimped at the end...

I also have some Rapala type hardbaits that I would like to pull so info on rigging that would be helpful...wasn't sure if the #10 wire would inhibit the action of the bait once hooked to the ring...also will the wire of that size be a deterent for tuna?

The green machine has Sea Striker beads for the hook offset...so the hook is about 1/2" from the end of the skirt...only using one hook...

The jet head has a crimp with a bead as the stop...again it will sit 1/2" from the end of the skirt once pulled down...

i would definitly do away with the crimps and use a haywire twist for your connections. and maybe scale down to 8 or 9 wire.

i'd use the haywire. and replace the top green machine with a glass head one it will run better.

Yup, let me give a few thoughts:

    1) Scale down the wire

    2) Haywire twist

    3) Lures, those will work. Jet's are cool, bullet lures, diving plugs. I would also rig some Ilanders with hoo's, feathers with pin rigs for belly strips.

    4) Wahoo i like the hook right end the end of the skirt. Not as far back as you would rig for Marlin, but the bottom of the hook touching the end of the skirt.

are the crimps going to cause problems?...the #10 is pretty darn hard to haywire twist...thats why I used the crimps...I have some #7 wire that I could haywire if that would be strong enough...

We do plan to run some Ilanders with ballyhoo's but they are my buddies and he will have to rig them...we also plan to run some cedar plugs flatlined...

will adding beads to the jethead to get hook spacing disturb with the bubble making?

Hard? You should try doing it with 15-18 for sharks!

Just get a haywire twist tool. They look like this.

    Crimps on wire...sure to slip.

So is the way you would run your hardbaits on wire?...its #7 wire (80#) haywired on...with baits that size (9 1/4" long) is wire still needed...I can twist the #10 but ohhh the fingers don't like it very much...I'll look into getting a haywire twist tool next time I'm at BPS...

I agree with the above comments, ditch the crimps and do the twist. If a crimp is used, it should be a single sleeve crimped to keep the lure up off the hook.

Also it's a little hard to tell from the photos but it looks like you're using barrel swivels. If they are, trash them also and invest in some ball bearing swivels.

I don't know if you plan on rigging the cedars on wire but I wouldn't. It will retard the action of them.

As far as the wire is concerned, when the tuna bite is on, you'll catch them. When they start to get finnicky, floro or mono only. Number seven wire may be a little light for some of the bigger fish, I've seen wahoo sky on baits pulled on seven and never come tight. When the bait was reeled in, all that was there was the bit through leader.

Good point Boxman. I almost forgot that they still made nonwelded hooks.
