I use either a single hook stiffy or 0 degree double hook rig...900lb of cable...heat shrink and crimped on both ends...Then, I attach the wire leader (haywire) and/or cable (crimped) to the hook rig...bottom hook is outside the skirt and touches skirts end...

Leaders no longer than 4'...Reason being...When a fish hits and runs, the lure will slide up the leader to the eye...If leader is to long, the lure will trail the fish and possibly be hit by another fish.

I also have some Rapala type hardbaits that I would like to pull so info on rigging that would be helpful...wasn't sure if the #10 wire would inhibit the action of the bait once hooked to the ring...also will the wire of that size be a deterent for tuna?

The green machine has Sea Striker beads for the hook offset...so the hook is about 1/2" from the end of the skirt...only using one hook...

The jet head has a crimp with a bead as the stop...again it will sit 1/2" from the end of the skirt once pulled down...

The spro swivels are very high quality. We use 120 pound for SBFT (100-150 pounds)

Don't forget to have something deep down. Personally I like a purple and black Jr. Ilander with a medium hoo' about 60' feet down. One more thing make sure you get some brite piano wire. I have found that I get alot more strikes with brite #8 piano wire than I do with standard coffee colored stainless steel wire.

BOX...got the wrong damn hooks at BPS...thought I got welded eye until I got home...should have known when they came up $3.00 for 5 of 'em that they was shit...as for filing...yes they will definitely get the file...things are pretty dull right out of the pack...as a matter of fact think I will just take 'em back and get the right hook...good thing they are close...

The swivels are SPRO barrel swivels (#6 - 80#)...BPS didn't have any SPRO ball bearing swivels...they had some Sampo's but they were VERY proud of those things...

Cedar plugs will be run on 150# mono...we were worried about the wire screwing up the action of it also...any way to toothproof them without messing up the action?...or does the plug itself act as the proofing...

Ilanders and ballyhoo's will be out but my buddy has those and he will have to rig them...thank goodness...

Wahooking...can you get me a better picture with the lure pulled up...maybe one prior to heat shrinking...do you use stranded wire for your rigging...was thinking about the lure sliding up and another fish hitting it thats why I made them 6' instead of 10'...but I will cut them down per your suggestion...would it be ok to slide a single barrel crimp with a small bead in front of the plug and crimp lightly to act as a stop for the lure so it can't slide up...say 3 or four inches in front of it...

Here is a past thread on making hook rigs: ????? SINGLE OR DOUBLE hook rigs....

You can do a crimp a couple of inches above the lure however, its another snag for hands and/or weeds...I don't like unnecessary crimps on the line...Just make the leaders 3-4' and you will be fine.

They may be, although I feel there is still no comparison in the smoothness of a BB vs. a barrel swivel. Just personal preference. I don't want my baits binding in ANY way.

Great post! I have wondered about much of this myself.

    Thanks!
